M4 Ordered. Now the wait.

Great choice, I like you wanted my next car to be british racing green .. yet the choice are so limited.

Oh well in a couple of years white will go back in the box it deserves to be in and green will be back

Very nice, I saw one of these in that same colour scheme whilst waiting for SWMBO to pick me up from Heathrow T5 on Friday PM. Looked very mean and purposeful.

Thanks, I'm trying my hardest not to overspend on carbon fibre accessories at present

drove a mineral grey/orange leather car today, DCT, and well... i can understand why you went manual , and grey! :)

good bits:

overall i liked the colour - understated and beasty! and the interior/gadgets/comfort all v nice. nice to drive, handling is good, not sure the sales guy was quite up for the test i had in mind! effortless speed (unsure about this as didnt feel as fast as it actually is), and the HUD is cool - could see myself being attached to that quite quickly.

bad bits:

wasnt impressed with the DCT box really, whilst changes are fast, the latency between requesting a change and receiving it wasnt that great, even in m1/m2 modes.

Didnt like the steering wheel, felt thin and reminded me of the non-M cars. duno if the M-perf one fixes this?

the noise was a bit strange.. mainly the total lack of it at low rpm, and almost too much at high rpm, i expected to barely notice the augmented noise (understanding why they do it i had no negative thoughts about it going into the test) but really it was so obvious when giving it the full beans it made me laugh out loud and i was kinda disappointed. It was much louder inside than outside!

i think an extended drive is needed to really start to get used to it and see if it ticks the boxes, but overall today i was sad to find myself with mixed opinions rather than running to sign an order form, i think im personally more attached to the NA engines than i realised! i really think you maybe onto something with the manual, im tempted to try and seek one out for a test.

Jimmy,

My thoughts matched your very similarly after my first drive in the DCT, the manual fixes the lag issue from my experience, however the FI / NA dispute will always be present, as will the aural experience side of things.

I got out of the manual with a bit of a grin on my face, the car is rapid and a nice place to be. The driving experience is a compromise when compared to the Z4MC imo, but then I need to consolidate practicality and excitement into one machine. I'm not sure there are many / any modern performance 4 seater's that will provide the same visceral excitement that the Z4M is able to.

Prettttty much.

It's an awesome car, but because i don't HAVE to get rid of the Z4, i'm not sure i'd want to lose the raw driving experience it clearly offers without replacing it with something similar, and sadly the more i explore the options the more i land on something like a 991 GTS (Manual) or a V12 Aston, neither of which are particularly affordable compared to the Zed :D

M4 is clearly the logical option, can see why you've done it. Best of luck - look forward to seeing/hearing it in the flesh if you're allowed back at Z4 meets ;)

As a modern take on a fast coupe its about as good as it gets because of EU regs. But I would go with 911 too. The M4 is too much of a compromise although with the "new maps" can improve the overall appeal and drive of the car.

This map basically allows you to have more settings like the current set up of sport sports plus etc. But what it does differently is even on sports plus the baffles are only half open, this allows you to set everything that you like and still have the sports exhaust on full throttle all the time which elevates the noise issue not entirely buts saves spending a wod on a new exhaust. Of corse you can put it all on standard for mots services etc. This map come in 3 stages apparently, one just a firmware to add more options (above) a stage two for power increase and 3 for even more, which looks pretty promising.

Easily getting over the 500 mark. Whether it does the turbos any good is another issue but its a cheap alternative.

If ever a car needed more power less it's the M4. Is 0-100 in the low 8's not enough?!! You'd have to be in a GT3 or turbo 991 to get anywhere near that.

I had a bit of a "do" with an M4 at weekend.....

It was quick......but couldnt pull away from me anywhere...

The 20 something with one direction hairstyle looked quite dismayed as the middle aged fat knacker in an Z4 laughed at him...

If you're modding an M4 I'd be looking at how to put more of the existing power down without overwhelming the chassis. That will make you faster than re-mapping.

As i said its an option. I was clearly pointing out the exhaust baffles OG.

I didn't say add it I said the map can be done, meaning its a good car.

But it doesn't matter how quick it is, its the disconnection and the M4 has it is spades. As a fast daily its incredible, anything else is pushing it.

Yes sorry Tom - it was just the more power bit I was querying. It will be interesting to see what this new M4 "concept" car is like - allegedly more power and lower weight - hopefully more resolved power deployment too.

You know, I think the current crop of performance cars also point to the reason cars like ours have become relatively sought after in recent years and why I think the Boxster 981 and Cayman will be too. The thing that struck me about the M3 when I drove it was just how damn quick it was and how little opportunity I would get to properly use it and also how little 'ceremony' there was when you did. I thought it was a fantastic car but I sometimes think my current car is too quick to properly use on our roads without risking a ban and a prison sentence. Plus, there was an interesting article on Road & Track's Facebook page today about how all the car makers are using synthesised sound. BMW did it in the M5 first and now even the 991 has synthesised intake noise because owners want it to be quiet in the cabin when cruising. It's so quiet that you can't hear the engine. VW have done it the Golf R and Audi have also been doing it too. As we get more cars like Teslas it will become the norm. A Tesla in "ludicrous" mode doing 0-62 in 3-point-whatever in total silence and then foot off the gas to avoid losing your licence. Hardly stuff to set your pulse racing (well not mine anyway).

I can believe this, especially if the M4 is a DCT, when I had a spirited test drive, full chat gear changes span the rear wheels up to 4th gear, there just doesn't seem to be any torque modulation with the DCT gearbox and the DSC kicks in very regularly.

This seems to be avoided in the manual as the driver directly modulates torque delivery and consequently can get power down more evenly.

The 911 chat really is moot here. Nobody who needs 4 genuine seats and a boot would consider a 911....obvs.

For £60k, the 2nd hand 911 would cost more monthly on a PCP deal (2nd hand APR's etc.. My dad has just purchased a 6 month old Cayenne S and achieved 7.1% APR which needed approval from head office to approve).

Ah, I've watched a lot of Nick Murray's videos before and since placing my order.

Normally very good videos, although, you do have to take them with a pinch of salt, ordinarily when he has a 'guest' M4 to review he always says that he prefers his guest's car over his own.

One example being being the chipped M4. In that vid, he repeatedly said that he would definitely chip his....but then he didn't. He's an incredibly nice guy, but sometimes I fear a bit too nice to say what he is really thinking.

Could be difficult if he invites the owner of a MT M4 into a vid, only for him to say "Sorry mate, I think you've made a poor decision"
