just collecting t pair of rears for the m, will save them till i get the fronts then i want to go for a little more agressive alignment , bedub has some previous posts re camber/ toe etc ,any suggestions. little confused over tyre's,are the michelin pilot supersport the same as pilot sport threes? need advice quick as am collecting the latter today and dont want the wrong tyres :?

As far as I know they are not the same.
PS3 was stopgap between PS2 and the all new PSS.

Just my understanding, happy to be corrected :-)

errrr no...

ps3 is the everyday for warmish cars, PSS is the replacement for the ps2. Do not put the ps3 in the same category as a high performance tyre, it was never that.

I was told today that ps3 is bmw star marked as correct fitment for our cars and that the pss is a much softer compound that will only give 5k on the road, also not available in sizes for the rear of the m coupe/roadster even more confused now as want the best tyres available but dont track it so cant live with replacing them every 5k !!! any experiece of either ps3 or pss. have the oem contis on now which people slate , how will the ps3 compare? thanks :?

PS3 is not a tyre you would use on a Z4M, you'd be doing the car a disservice by doing so. Whoever advised that the PSS only last 5000 miles really have no idea what they're talking about. I used PS2s for years and probably got 10,000 miles out of the rears. It's widely recognised that the PSS will give you better mileage than that and for sure they're a better tyre than the PS2. I run 19s so I've no experience of using alternative sized PSS on 18s but check posts by mmm-five and you'll find the answer.

I'm up to 20,000 miles on my PSS and still got 4mm all round. Used as my daily drive.

They are on OEM 18" wheels, 225/45 at front which is standard fitment size and 265/40 at rear which is a little larger than the standard but there are no issues with this size at all.

What year is your coupe? I was thinking of doing the same sizes when my rears are needing replacement to tide me over until I can go 235/45 front and 265/40 rear. Does the 225/45 & 265/40 combo causes any issue with ABS/DSC/DTC, etc...? Thanks.

+1 for pss being both fantastic for wear and performance. I'm going doing this route on my oem csls in the next few weeks. Tire leader is by far the cheapest online

I found Oponeo to be cheapest? Do you have a link for tire leader prices?

whoever told you that was basically talking complete shite, and didn't have a clue about cars in general it seem.... 5k miles from a PSS?? lmao... it not a semi slick which probably won't do much more if used properly.

I got one of the first sets of PSS in 2012 and started extoling their virtues to anyone who'd listen. I've got my staunch GT-R owning, ex-Aston test-driver, Toyo-loving spanner-monkey to try them and he's hooked. Every e34 M5 owner I've spoken to who's tried them cannot understand how they can perform so well yet last as long as they do. Even exdos was not convinced that the PSS would be much better than the OE Continentals, but I think he's changed his mind somewhat :poke:

In performance terms:
- the PS3 is somewhere between the old Pilot Exalto and the old PS2 - i.e. a 'touring' tyre - something akin to the original Conti M3s the Z4Ms were supplied with (not terrible, but there is better)
- the PSS is somewhere between the old PS2 and the Pilot Sport Cup - i.e. a 'performance' tyre

In longevity terms:
- the PS3 is better than the Pilot Exalto, whilst giving more grip
- the PSS is better than the PS2/Conti SC M3 (10,000 vs 18,000 miles from the rears & double that for the fronts in my experience - including track days & ring trips) whilst giving more grip

The PSS is available in 255/40/r18, but I've stuck with the 265/40r18 as it makes my speedo more accurate.

The other tyres might have a 'BMW-star' on them, but the PSS is supplied OE on the new M5/M6s, so I'd assume they were 'BMW approved' too.

I have to say that the Michelin PSS are at least one step up from other road tyres I've experienced in performance and grip. I've done about 3k miles on the rears and 2k miles on the fronts, including about 500 miles around The Ring and I've just been out and measured that I've still got around 6.7mm - 7mm tread on the rears, and over 7mm tread on the fronts across the FULL width of the tyres. I'm running the larger 235 and 265 sizes on the OEM 224s with 10mm spacers all round. They are quieter than the Contis but are stiffer: for road use, I've had to soften my suspension set up by 2 clicks all round. I normally don't get more than 10k miles from any tyres on the driven wheels (either RWD or FWD- I'm on my 5th different pair of rear tyres on my Z3MC which has done 36k miles) but with a wear rate of around 1.3mm per 3k miles, it looks like I'll get over 14k miles out of these before I would be at 1.6mm tread (I normally bin tyres at 3mm of tread).

this is becoming a pita !! went to collect today but realised i had told them my rears were 255 35 18 's they are actually 255 40 18's doh. so they have gone back, nearly changed my mind and went for the contis again as then i would only need two as plenty of tread on the fronts,... But half the fun of sports car ownership is the thrill of trying and buying new things and the anticipation of the researching through this great forum, listening to views and opinions from people with way more experience than me. so , basically i should have done more research before i ordered the ps3's , just thought michelin were the tyres to have and was really surprised to read that ps3 are not really a performance tyre and not really fit for an mcoupe or roady. seeing the contis are very old tyres i fancy a change anyway ,and the pss are not much dearer than the contis , I think now the best bet is to go as some suggest on here for pss 265 40 18. anyone know the price for them ? also if someone here had to soften rear suspension by two clicks, will my oem suspension now feel even harder, ????

These appear the best deal at the moment unless someone seen otherwise...

thanks for the info guys, pss's it is then, do the 265 /40/18 have a bigger or smaller hieght / rolling circumference ?also my old rears have worn on the inside edges, is this just due to the negative camber on the rear and thus normal or do i need to get an alignment , any suggestions for set up for better turn in, eg front camber pins etc? thanks

Mine is an 07 in Imola Red. No issues at all other than as mentioned by mmm-five, the speedo will be more accurate.

+1
For this seller, ordered Eagle F1 AS2's for my ///Z4MC on Monday and they are now on the car and cheaper than anyone else locally or on-line.

sorted ! thanks for everyone for putting me straight, would have been well hacked off if i had bought and fitted the ps3 and then found out i had bought a lesser performance tyre. 265 /40/18 pilot super sports here monday at 170 each plus vat, from local supplier with good family discount, a tenner more than online but i can live with that. hope to get the fronts in a couple of weeks then fitted and mc aligned. thanks again for as usual excellent knowledge and advice from all.
