The Z4 MC has been a pin up car for me for years. Back in 2009-2010 , whilst studying, you could say I was mildly obsessed with them! I spent a lot of time looking on auto trader watching prices, and set my eyes on them for a future buy - some incentive to get my head down and work, as a means to an end and graduate. So I went along and passed the relentless exams, and graduated. Real-life hit and I realised a z4mc was way out of the question, and so I kept my 206gti for the next two years or so (which I got some money towards for my 21st).
At the end of 2012 I decided to go for a Z4 roadster, after toying with the idea of an SLK on lease. I don't regret that decision one bit, and the 3.0si sport has been amazing. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and ownership has been really surprising. The handling, the beautiful noise of the n52 which is an absolute all rounder, and then the obvious ability of dropping the roof has never tired. It always gets looks, from others and myself! I don't want to sell it!
However, the past month brought along a random urge to take the plunge for the pin-up. It was a little earlier than planned, but I figure I didn't want to get one on 60k+ in a few years, whilst any lower than that in the future and they possibly could be at a serious premium. So at risk of the unknown - I've done it.
I'd seen an interlagos AUC which was OK, had an interesting individual interior but it wasn't worth what the dealer was asking and didn't have all the options that I wanted. (That, and the dealership was a bit rude and couldn't spell via email
) . I then saw a forum member's car which itself was spot on. However not having much back-up funds for disasters, and myself having pretty bad luck with things breaking, my dad convinced me to go via the dealership route - purely as a "just-in-case security" kind of thing.
So finally, all within two weeks I came across another AUC car. Silver grey (some may say boring but personally my favourite), along with imola red nappa interior and the carbon leather dash. The colour combo in my eyes is just perfect, really balances the performance look for me. It also has all the spec which I was after, even down to privacy glass and electric folding mirrors alongside the common extras which ///M owners often thankfully opted for. The car was over 100 miles away and after the dealer did the walk-around videos, I decided to put a refundable deposit down. This was on Tuesday.
Friday, early morning rental of a 1.2 corsa and off we went. The car was as described and sat at bang on 43k miles (a little more than I wanted but at least with warranty). Along with some new wheel centre caps and a pretty cool ///M umbrella the keys were handed over and there it was, as easy as that.
If you're still reading, well sorry for blabbering and I'm impressed you're still awake
Compared to the 3.0si sport roadster, it honestly feels 95% different. The only similarities are the driving position, trip computer and the blurred eye look of the car in general - which is obviously still a Z4. It does stop there though.
The clutch and steering both are pretty heavy, as you'd want. The gearbox feels nice however and not too heavy as some experience. Gone is the peachey and very nice sound of the 3.0N52, and instead replaced with an idling sound in start up which made me laugh, and what can only be described as a rasping roar every time you accelerate. It is addictive. And as for the ability for the thing to rev, it really is amazing. Plus after spending hours in traffic on the M25, I still got home with 26mpg as an average! Driving at a constant the car is actually really quiet, and a comfy cruiser, actually a better ride than the SI. However, round town it does need to be kept on a leash, it is so easy to wander above and below 30 - you feel it just trying to stretch its legs at every opportunity.
It still hasn't sunk in that I've got one, but hopefully providing she treats me well she will be an absolute keeper.
Anyway, thanks for reading If you got this far. This forum is great, and an insight for anyone who has or wants to have the bug for a zed.
So here's a barrage of pics, and I will probably post the odd PIC if anything on the car changes etc.
