M Servicing Query

Ok, so I want to check some details before I take enquiries further on a car I like.

The car has had servicing at the right mileage intervals, but there was a period of 2yrs and 5months between services, and an earlier gap of 2yrs 2 months. It's got full BMW history, with one indy stamp.

Running in service is ok, mileage intervals ok. History is - Run in, Oil, Inp 1, Oil, Insp 2.

Is this an issue? Should I be bothered? Car has BMW warranty and was Sytner AUC.

On a 3.0i etc, I wouldn't be too bothered (as long as the gap wasn't massive, like, say 4 yrs.... won't mention any names on that!). However, on an M, does the extra 5 month gap between services create any issues?

Would you walk away, or go with it?

If everything else is ticking the boxes and you view the car to be mechanically sound I think you'll be pretty safe. It's perfectly right to be anal about servicing and some don't like it a note over 2 years but consider the mileage the vehicle has done in that time frame too...
Who was the Indy?

I think if it was me, its not stupidly over the time/mileage recommendations and if it checks out, is ex AUC and comes with a watertight warranty, whats not to like.

Service depends on how you use it, it's not mileage or years
Drive it like a granny and you get a longer service interval, I'd be more worried if it had service sooner
Best is to find one with services slightly longer than normal with documented oil change between
That's a car that's not been ragged or done lots of small cold journeys

A few months ? Nah, wouldn't cause me an issue if everything else is fine. A year maybe, but this could just have been someone either out the country at the time it should have been done, or simply didn't manage to find the time at exactly the date it was required. If the mileage countdown hadn't hit zero and it was doing low miles then it would be easy to miss by accident.

What colour is it ? Better not be red :x :D

When do Ms have the valve clearances checked? I always thought this was inspection 2? Have I got it wrong?

Bing - that would be telling ;)

I can only go on my experience where I rejected my first ///M because of under servicing on time by 8 months, mileage wise was correct.

When I spoke to BMW warranty on the phone they said that claims could be rejected due to this.

The BMW dealer offered me two years warranty, the next service for free (inspec 2) and said they would buy the car back at a later date (of course they would, but at what price)

Now perhaps I was rash, but at the time I was pissed of as they said history was 100%, and I was concerned that the warranty wouldn't cover the one thing I wanted it to. Also at the time everybody was only looking at ///M's with 100% service history.

It's my belief if you want a warranty on your car you need to ensure the history is 100% or get it in writing they will cover knowing the history isnt 100%.

My current one is all correct except it has missed a brake fluid change by 1 year, but I can live with that.

It's got insured warranty at £60 a month or something like that.... It's the top insured warranty. I don't know much about them.

Ok - I'm less worries about the missing Insp 2 if the valve clearances have just been done.

Might pursue this one a little further

But that's jumping to conclusions.

Mine will have an oil service every 2 years at around 4k. I never use the car for short journeys, only descent runs where it will be warmed thoroughly.

Throws your theory out the window.

It's kept me trouble free motoring for 30 years so il keep it thanks, there are always exceptions to the rule as you just showed
As I understand it the ecu calculates service time by using fuel used and miles traveled, so hard driven cars get to service quicker than gently driven cars, cars doing short commutes are on cold enrichment for a higher % of the journey so use more fuel per mile so get to its service quicker than a car driven 20 miles to work each day

Car is in at Eastern BMW to get the remaining Insp 2 items done (see above about last service being Insp 1 instead of Insp 2). It's having spark plugs done, gearbox and diff oil changed, air filter changed.

Hope they look after her.... I hate putting my car into the stealers

I assume you've advised them NOT to wash it?? Last time mines was there for work they ignored that request and it looked like it had been cleaned using the water they had collected off a very muddy X5. Was not best pleased!!!

Yes, specifically asked them not to wash it. That's my main worry.

Last time I was at John Clarks in Dundee they actually listened and didn't wash. Fingers crossed Eastern follow suit :|
