M Retrofit Cruise Control (again)

I had cruise retro fitted to my Nov '06 M Coupe by Prestige.

Brilliant service, great price.

I stayed at the Premier Inn / Travelodge nearby and got the train/shuttle thingy to Newcastle and spent a few hours going round on an open top bus and doing a bit of tourist type stuff. Cracking service from the main guy at Prestige. Highly recommended.

It's actually very simple to do; I've done it on my facelift coupe, you'd sooner do it yourself than spend that kinda money. If that's not an option, offer the job to a forum member who'll do it for beer money.

But you've got the 3.0si haven't you? It's not as straightforward on the M hence the thread.

Job Done!

Cruise Control fitted and fully functional. Dropped car off at 08:30 Friday, collected at 12:00.

Returned it at 12:30 to have steering wheel removed and put back on straight!

Will have to go to local indie to get some of the programming I previously had redone, a flick of the indicators no longer gives the three flashes I had it programmed for, not sure if anything else has been reset. Not terribly impressed!

Anyway I asked the boss what the trick is on an M to fit cruise.

Answer was.... There is no trick he just orders a retrofit kit from BMW and fits it. Allegedly "they all need to be soldered into the loom down by the ECU". Have no idea of the accuracy of this statement though.

However, on my return visit to get the steering wheel sorted, the "lads" told me they "have to make up a loom for the M's". My guess from this is that there's probably a connector absent at the ECU end but all the wiring is basically the same so they manually connect what would otherwise be a push fit.

HTH.

Thanks for the update, can I ask what the final cost was? I'll probably still go ahead with this despite the issues you had.

Thanks for that i will still do it but be aware of the wheel.

I assume a main dealer would charge for the re programming of your presets and a indie not as much?

Thanks

Why would they remove the wheel? :tumbleweed:

You obviously don't need to for the cowling, I'd doubt mine was removed tbh.

If anyone else is heading up there you might wanna ask beforehand about having the key programmed - any options you want etc.

Glad it worked out ok for you in the end.

Was just thinking today that surely if we had the wiring diagram for a normal 2007+ Z4 and a 2007+ Z4M then it would be obvious what went where... I just cant imagine it being that difficult. 'Making up the loom' would be a doddle too even if resistor/s were required (although i doubt it).

So to recap - the price of a retro fit kit is £150?
And the price for the kit fitted is £250

Craig

I'm sure someone with enough initiative on here would manage it.. If Pawn or CJ had an /M there'd be a HowTo by now, but sadly it wasn't something i have the skills to attempt.

Wiring diagrams here:

The actual switch is more like £68 from the dealer if you cut the cowel yourself (£150 kit has the cowell to swap).

£68 is a bargain if we can work out how its fitted! I see a challenge for a clever person... Haha. Easiest thing is if someone who has had it done whips their cowel off (Ooh er!) and takes some pics. Should all be pretty obvious then. :D

"Whipping the cowl off" would show where to fit the new loom you've just bought ( approx. £20) along with the nice new cruise control stalk (approx £70) :) , as I said originally, the clever bit allegedly happens once you've threaded the loom down to the ECU somewhere down under the dash (?) where you carefully identify which wires from the ecu that you need to splice the new loom into.

Whilst I've happily changed engines, gearboxes, converted my other car from carbs to 3D mapped injection etc. etc. I wasn't too happy to play around with the wiring on the Z as that has the potential to be ££££ if I make a mistake! let alone the (probably very low) risk of doing something that might affect my (or others) safety in a 340+BHP car!!

On that basis I was happy to pay someone professional who has done it several times before to do the job!

If you do DIY, Well Done! if you muck up the cowl whilst converting it drop me a PM I have a spare from the kit :-)

So yeh, why did they take the steering wheel off!?

South shields isn't too far from me...couple of hours. Meh, might take a jaunt down.

^^^ come on mate - its more than 2 hours from Aberdeen!!! :poke:

We could go down together and hopefully get a discount... :D

I'll join in as you pass and maybe we can get a bigger discount. :)

excellent!!! Start a list...

Or we could chip in and get one persons car fitted while we watch - copy and paste! 8)

Anyone else???

LOL! Folks live in Helensburgh (North of Glasgow) so ok....ambitious on a couple of hrs but not too bad, will drive down, ping her off to do some shopping in the toon and be done with it!

I'm certainly up for this!

You going to get the cowel or drill your oem one?

Ok mate, just messing about anyway!

I would just mod my cowel if doing it. The BMW one is crazy money for the luxury of an extra hole!

Still just not sure on the £300 price tag for a nice to have... (5 tanks of fuel however...) :driving:

^ With 3 of us they may be willing to play about on the price!

You still up for it, i'm a bit tight for cash this month! Mexico deposit paid today! But up for it in May/June!

I'm up for it, would have to be May for me. I'm not sure they'd give enough of a discount to make it worthwhile co ordinating it but it's worth a try.
