M market watch

IMHO, I think the market is being driven down by the economic uncertainty with the prospect of higher taxes and a flat lining economy, rather than Z4Ms falling out of favour.
If, and when, the economy returns to more bullish prospects, then the market for Z4Ms and their ilk, in essence flippant purchases, will no doubt strengthen again.

Exactly this!

And when do you suppose we are going to get either of the following -

Half decent growth
Certainty that relevant taxes won't rise in the next year or two (income tax, fuel duty, car tax on fast ICE cars, NI)

The latter won't come until the next Tory government, if then.

The former won't come until we have greater equality and ordinary people have a bit more spare cash, because it is spending that drives growth, and ordinary people spend (the rich save instead). And greater equality doesn't look likely under labour, and is the complete opposite of Tory and Reform policy, so I wouldn't hold your breath for growth either.

Regardless its a buyers market, the values have sunk at least 30% and regardless how you feel if your interested in an M its is a good time to buy if its going to be a keeper, for most of the people in this conversation that what the comment was aimed at.

Agreed!

I had an S2000 and it sold in a matter of weeks, had like 10 messages a day. And that was in Winter. That cars on an upwards curve at the moment, so I think it's just a matter of when a car starts to get loved a bit, as well as economic conditions.

The S2000 CR is outrageously expensive at the moment around the world, and only going up. https://www.hagerty.com/media/market-trends/123-mile-honda-s2000-cr-demolishes-auction-record/ However around 2009-10 after the economic crash you could get an S2000 CR for way, way less than they are now as no one wanted them. Think it'll be the same story with the Z4M..eventually.

If you currently have an M and have no plans to sell it then happy days really, as you have a brilliant car, and I think eventually in about 10 years it'll be a very valuable asset.

If you're a buyer and want to buy and keep for a while, same as above but they're much more affordable so a good time to hop in.

If you're a seller at the moment like me, it all sucks a bit

But to put the loss in actual values, it is not that much. If you bought for 16, selling for 13 would only lose 3k. That is nothing compared to buying any new car.

I am happy with the M at 13k, as I do want to step in and get another one as a keeper. I think I have to wait probably until the winter though when the lower miles garage queen ones are getting to that.

So if anyone wants to sell me one at the new price level

Totally! And unlike a newer more forgettable car like and Audi S3 or something, you know the values will eventually rise again rather than just plummet.

Mine's on for £13500 currently on here so there may be some wiggle room

I am not retrofitting the satnav again, done it twice and it is now even more expensive than when I last did it in 2006. I need that screen for the new CarPlay setup so any M has to have the screen in it.

I quite like the old system in a weird retro way. Id be tempted to update it though if it’s easy and can be reverted back

Well, I bought all the CarPlay upgrade gear which consists of a new TV tuner in the boot and two cables to the front. When I get rid of the car, I will take the tuner out and leave the two cables and buy them again. Too expensive to leave with the car.

I have owned my Z4MR since 2011, I have no intention of selling, so the resale value is partly immaterial, other than it is nice to know if values are rising.

I think in a world of boring cars, EV's etc, this has to be one of the best value raw driving cars available.

I have taken the decision to invest in mine. I have in the past few years fitted OEM CSL's, just finalising the Karbonius and mapping, and arranging the Carplay fitting with Baris. I have some Aero skirts to fit, and intend to refresh the suspension over the winter, and maybe a 25mm drop in height so the CSL's better fill the arches. I have also just refreshed all the brakes, new hoses, calipers stripped, new seals, new discs and pads on the rear, fronts are ok.

I get as much pleasure out of doing the work, so its win win for me.

This is how it should be.

Great. I bought my ZMR in the same year after enjoying a 993C2 for several years. I missed the involvement of having a convertible and couldn't really find anything at the time with such a stunning drivetrain and character, until trying the zed. I really didn't get on with earlier Z4 Alpina, 3.0Si Coupe test drives, so had given up. I just happened to walk past a dealer with an MR instock and thought why not.

I'm pretty sure that car from Sytner had a broken rear spring, but otherwise, I just found it intoxicating at high revs roof down on back roads. If I had decided at the time to do more track work, it would have been a 997 GT3, but on the road with the roof down, the zed felt even more special.

They are incredible value and very cheap to buy / own compared to anything comparable. If there is such a thing.

That's not to say they are perfect, far from it. Mine is staying

Just completed a 2100 mile Euro trip in mine and absolutely brilliant, never missed a beat.
Averaged 28.4 MPG for the hole trip. Not bad considering the speeds we where doing on German roads.

How are the BCs working out for you?

I'm off tomorrow myself in my MR, 2,000 miles of hard charging across the best driving roads in the world.

Hi,
Absolute fantastic.
So much more composed at speed and differently a big improvement in ride quality over standard.
I actually went with the new spring and damping rates that these are supplied wit now.
Front i think are only 5.5 KG and rears 8KG . Was a little worried that they where going to be to soft but where absolutely fine.Never once bottomed out front or rear which was surprising with all the weight i was carrying in the boot for the 15 day trip for 2

That's what they were made for.

I did 2,000 miles in a week last year on B21s NC500 trip, after a detour to Yorkshire on the way North, and loved it. Been to Scotland twice more since and heading back up there next month so that will be another 1,000+ miles. :D

IMHO they really do seem to be a bargain for what you get.

Completely agree with everyone’s comments that the market is dead. I’ve had mine up for sale since the start of June here and since July on autotrader and eBay with very little interest. Been dropping the price repeatedly. I thought the car would be the sort of thing people were looking for. Owned it for 6 years, good service history, Vanos, bearings, valves, etc. and lots of preventative maintenance done during ownership and 59k miles but even at £13.5k no interest. I’d have been better off neglecting the works and servicing, saving £5k and just sell for £10k had I known.

However lots of cars are in the doldrums at the moment, so because of a change in life circumstances I took the opportunity and bought my dream car that I never thought I’d own - so not all bad news :D . Life is fleeting and so it seems if you want a Z4 or your next dream it’s a good time to do it.
Have you considered putting it on the likes of Collecting Cars?

I echo Coppins999’s thoughts and ive also been in touch with Collecting Cars. The fella on the phone said he’s happy to do it and would be looking for around 12-13k max and it would be with no reserve, which didn’t really fill me with much hope considering the market at the moment. Bit of a gamble

R60BBA and Abbas, I did think about going to online auctions earlier in the summer. I actually bought my replacement via Trade Classics and they offered a great service, helping negotiate when the car didn’t meet reserve to get to an agreeable solution. However if I go to auction now it will be unlikely to be listed until October now and for a convertible, probably too late for a reasonable interest level.

Funnily enough I’ve had three people interested in the last week as the advert “renewed” on autotrader. So will see what happens.

However if it doesn’t sell, I’ll just ‘mothball’ it, put the cosmetics back to standard wheels, badges, side markers etc. Possibly dye the hood black, sell the 19” CSL wheels separately and re-advertise a bit before Easter.
