Seems a shame to fit the M54 when the S62 looks so good under the bonnet...

That looks Awesome! I like how the big plastic box ontop fits between the strut tower strengtheners

wasn't there a bloke on here wicht was doing such a conversion, and did engine swaps for a livin ?

I've seen the S85 V10 swap on here, but not an S62 V8 (like the Hartge Z50).

For the price of the S85 engine you could almost buy a complete E39 M5 donor car!

but didn't those engine's have a problem wich could cause a lott of damage if it ocurred ?

i'd rather go for the e9x M3 engine also a V8

keep your z as is you like it too much, then get this as your runabout.... im sure you could slum it in the s**t tip car that surrounds the lovely engine :D

But wot a beauty that M4 is

yeah it is but 70K ..... too many other things i would want to be in at that price point. even if you managed to get it for say 55K id still be looking at other stuff over that like an f type, porka, bently, astons. the 4 series even in an M isnt special enough for that money. still a damn nice car tho

Having read up a lot on the S62 M5 V8 (I'll be embarassed if I've remembered the engine code wrong now!) they are actually pretty bullet proof. VANOS rattle is just that: rattle. And doesnt get worse. After the E36 VANOS problems it seemed like BMW panicked when the M5s started getting rattly VANOS units and replaced them under warranty. Leading to the notion that they were timebombs. Theyre not. They just get rattly. Also big end bearings apparently are a weak spot. But theres very few cars that have suffered failure compared to the many that havnt.
The problem is that the MAFs and CPSs are consumables, and need replacing every 50,000 miles or so. So you've probably got a bill for around £1000 of sensors before you even get the engine out of the M5 and into your E85/6. Added to that its probably a nightmare with the wiring as its a different generation (not sure of the BUS wiring etc on the E39 compared to the newer ones).
