Luggage Partition Problem? Roof Won't Go Down

Hi

I purchased my 2009 Z4 on Friday from a private seller. The roof was working fine and I was able to put it down several times with no problem.

On Saturday I was showing a friend the boot space and moved the luggage partition up and then back down. Then when I tried to put the roof down nothing happened... When I press the button inside the cabin it lights up red, a sound is made and a warning light shows yellow, indicating the following:

1. High temperature of roof motor (unlikely)

2. Luggage area partition not in bottom position (it looks locked into place on both sides to me)

3. Roof operation only possible at standstill (it is at standstill)

Is there something I'm not doing correctly? Or could a sensor be broken that makes the car think the luggage partition is still up?

There aren't many miles on the car and a few of the micro switches have been replaced.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Make sure you press the partition firmly down towards the back of it, both sides. It can look like it's located but it's not. Also make sure there's nothing on the two areas to the right & left of the shelf.

Thanks for your super quick replies!

Yes, I've tried it with the engine running.

I've pushed the partition down as far as it seems to go, both sides seem to be in place. The roof is completely empty.

There were some rain drops on the roof when I first put it down... although it was still working later that day.

I put it down and up using the key fob a couple of times... I was showing off!

(Totally in love with it!!)

Don't know if this is relevant but might help - http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=56836&hilit=roof+micro+switch#p833245

I took a look in the boot today... the luggage partition looked like it was in correctly:

When I opened up the little storage compartment on the left hand side I discovered it was filled with about an inch of water which I sponged out...

When I lifted up the floor panel I removed the foam which felt a bit damp and have placed it on a radiator to dry out...

Help!

Ooh water in there is not good news. Someone else here had water ingress down there and it damaged the pump, you might want to check that. The pump is under that foam, check for signs of corrosion on the pump and battery clamps right at the bottom of that sump. The going theory is that water leaks through badly designed rear lamps and fills the sump causing corrosion of the pump. I've only seen one other on here and US forums with this issue so hopefully its not common (I've certainly checked mine more than once!).

Oh dear... I think I'll go and check out the threads on warranties!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. All your advice is greatly appreciated!

Hopefully its something simple... here's what happened to the other guy tho;

Thanks Maniac

I read that thread a few days ago... and it I think the rubber/foam boxing is definitely damp in mine.

ZOIKES!

Looks like you have had some damp for some time. Make sure the rubber seal around the boot is fully pushed down around the boot opening.
If you have to, pull it off and reseat it to satisfy yourself.
The first picture showing the black plastic shaped like a key hole, the square trim around it lifts off easily. Underneath is what looks like a Hall sensor and its connector (only on left side). That might be wet.

I have recently had all the boot trim out, straight forward job, as i have just replaced the rear dampers. Good opportunity to have a good look around at whats what. Try placing sheets of kitchen roll around boot to track down leak.

If you remove the plastic trim from behind the tail lamps, you can check the seals there also.

I thought I'd give you an update...

I took the car to the car wash on Tuesday. As soon as I left a RED roof warning came up on the dash and on the roof down button as well as a repetitive dong noise. After a short distance I pulled over and pressed the roof down button and the windows went down but not the roof (it was quite tricky getting them back up for some reason).

Today I was showing the car to a relative and when I pressed the roof down button it actually worked!!! Down came the windows and roof and it's been working ever since!

I'm not sure what has happened, but I'm guessing that water is getting into the roof motor which has now dried up... so I think I need to check the seals around the boot.

I'm delighted!

Hope that's got it sorted pal :)

It's great news it's working but you really need to find the fault because it could happen again when it's down and won't go back up for some reason. Which would leave an insecure car or you wet through in the rain.

Given its been affected by a car wash do as was suggested with paper towels all over the inner boot and track down and seal that leak!
