LSD

Yes they do.

Drop the diff out remove the internals change over the gear ring resemble. The put the diff back in. That is simplified quite a bit. You have to check the back lash in the diff and teeth tolerances and re check when it all goes back together. Yorkie Z did his in a day mine has taken a lot longer due to carrying out lots of other jobs and being sent the wrong diff :headbang: :headbang:

I have found it fairly challenging but if your handy with tools its possible to DIY.

The only thing I would say you will have problems with is removing the old bearings. Yorkie and myself where able to machine the old diff internals a bit on a lathe so we could get pullers on them. Steve at Grinspeed said he couldn't get them off and had to buy new ones.

so realistically....
I have a 3.0 2003, what exactly do I need? and how much?
the diff is £600? then I need oil seals? bearings (I don't think I could pull old ones) so if you had to prepare for the worst how much is it all in all?

If just the diff your doing I would think you would get change from 1k.

I struggled and couldn't get bearings though. But if you could get your diff to me I could get them off for you.

Sorry for the mixup. Hope you received the replacement diff ok?

Hello

Yes these things happen. I was very impressed with Steve at Grinspeed how he sorted it all out. And nothing is to much trouble for that guy he was and has helped loads

And without blowing smoke up your but (and I promise I am not on the pay roll forum) I am an engineer and the quality of the product is second to none! I couldn't begin to make one for myself for the price!

Haven't used it but I have only heard good things.

Good work M factory

HOLY THREAD REVIVAL!! :driving:

I'm just chatting with Stevie from Grinspeed UK about an MFactory LSD to my car, because the Polish MFactory Division occured to be total jerks I will be buying from UK
But according to realoem, and BMW dealership 2006 z4 roadster 3.0si manual has a diff ratio of 3.23 as opposed to coupe which has 3.46

Anyone had a chcance to check that info?
Would be a PITA if they would send me a diffrent LSD as my z4 is a daily driver, and I dont have any backup car to leave the Zed without a diff for a month..

Hey there,

which dealer in Poland was it you found unsatisfactory?

if you have a 3.23 or 3.46, the LSD is the same fitment. Even if it were wrong, it is only the bottom flange that is different, and we could have a replacement flange out to you in a few days.

for Diff Bearings, we now keep these in stock for those who need them :)

Thanks!

Yep! Saw that title and immediately started in with "legend of a mind" by the Moody Blues

Get the bearings I had to use a lathe and turn down the old case. So I could get the pullers on.

You won't regret this best thing I have done to my car!!

Are diff bearings a part of a set that one purchases? ore I should buy them alone?
And are they the same as stock, or you use some different bearings?
And what about the diif oil? I've read somewhere that it should be changed in 300-500miles after the instalation, right?

BTW MFactory you have a PM

I used the same bearings so cant help you with that. Did change the oil after 400 which is recommended by M factory.

You can get them off but it is tricky.
I used a really sharp chisel the get the first movement (you know, that first crack) of the diff (with a really hard/sharp blow from a heavy hammer) and then use a large hydraulic puller (€70 from ebay or so..). The puller was a large knive style puller so I had no trouble getting it seated. I had to use the chisel because even that big ass hydraulic puller wasn't strong enough to get the bearing starting to move.

So I got them off completely undamaged. Obviously you must be careful with hammers etc that you don't accidentally strike the bearing cage etc.

But having a new set of bearings on the side is always nice. Though expensive they are really hard to get elsewere.

To get the bearings on the new diff is really easy: heat some oil, put the bearings in, and when the bearings are hot, tap them on the new diff. Hardly any force needed, so no chance of damage

Does anyone run a plate/clutch type LSD on their Z4?

I can see how the lack of maintenance is a positive with a helical but I like how with a plate diff you can really chuck the car into the corner and get plenty of drive on the exit. No worries about lifting a wheel etc.
