bit of a lie.....actually never had 1 when i bought the car.......

if i call my local bmw dealer will they be able to give me a blank 1 ??? any recs?

thx in advance

You can buy one, and they will be able to put the history back in, as long as it's all dealer history.

It might sound silly but what's the difference? All the service records are on the BMW computer system. (I suppose that won't help if you go to an Indie). The reason I say this is because I haven't had a dealer stamp in my Z3, M3 or both my Volvo's unless I specifically requested it.

Is it critical where you are?

I had the same, complained to the dealer and they organised a new one - sending it off to any of the other dealers who did the servicing to get it stamped accordingly. Took a while but got there in the end.... albeit with the wrong service manual - condition based rather than mileage etc :headbang:

if independants have done any then they obviously wont have the data etc.

mcbee - private buyers without access to the bmw system will expect to see the history present and correct

i was thinking about my service book and what happens when i come to sell the car

my car is a 53 and i probably wont get it serviced at the dealer, i know a perfectly good mechanic (god parent = cheap) that will do the job just as well as if not better than half of the hairy arsed looking fellas at my local BMW garage.

the question is, how would you guys feel buying a car that had dealer service history to a point and then no dealer service histor after but i kept a really good record, including invoices and receipts with dates in a file?

personally i would find that quite acceptable, although i always have my cars checked out. what do you guys think?

I think that as long as it has been cared for to BMW guidelines I dont think it matters that much - certainly as the car gets older...

be harder to part ex with BMW though.

Because I'm inexperienced with looking after expensive (well Z4 is for me!) cars and and have little knowledge about car mechanics, I'll be hesitant to buy a car that hasn't got full dealer service. I know it doesn't mean the car's been cared well, but atleast you'll get a feeling of security (dellusion?) that BMW must have some level of standard.

Yes, pretty much. A fully dealer-stamped book is what most buyers want to see, even though it's all stored on the system with the key. Easily sorted though, my sister lost hers for a Mini, bought a new one from parts (£17.50!!), then went to the dealers that serviced it for the stamps. thats the downside - the dealer will only stamp it if THEY serviced it, even if they can see on their system another BMW dealer did so...so if it has been serviced all over the place, you need to visit each one! Dealers always stamp the book.

For me it depends on the car. In most cases, private buyers (and especially dealers who have self interest to do so) insist on seeing main dealer stamps for at least the first 3 years. When its out of warranty (even though you no longer have to have main dealer servicing for a warranty to apply) many people switch to Indys and I think buyers accept that is the case. Though BMW do do that 4+ scheme, not sure what the discount is?

On something like an M car - M5/M3/Z4M/Z3M etc - I think I would want to see main dealer or the stamp of one of a few well known and trusted BMW specialists - Thorney, Birds, etc. As M cars get older, people buy them as bargains and neglect the maintenance, just have it serviced by 'Dave down the road'...or not at all. Using the right oil, Insp 2 valve clearances etc are important, especially as the miles go up.

Complete agree with both. Due to bad experiences in the past I've got zero confidence in dealer servicing (yes Renault, that's you in particular). I'm happy to see independent garage stamps along with a heap of receipts and invoices on a used car - in fact, a heap of receipts and invoices organised into a file would be a great sign of a cared for car. And as gannet says, in my opinion dealer stamps become less important the older a car gets. I wouldn't buy a car with NO sevice history whatsoever though.

I got fed up with my supplying dealer promising to send me a completed one so I decided to do it myself.

I got a book from my local dealer (had the wallet and all the other leaflets/manuals) and decided that I'd visit each of the dealers in turn on my way back from working in Basingstoke (dealers in Basingstoke, Essex and Hertfordshire).

So, I stayed over in Basingstoke for an extra night only to wake up to the first heavy dump of snow of the the winter (night/morning of 17/18 December) and decided I'd still try my best otherwise I'd let it slip for another year before trying it again.

Luckily the roads were quiet - although covered in snow, and I saw plenty of cars abandonded on the side of the roads, but I ploughed on (using the front spoiler to clear the snow), and covered about 250 miles sorting it out.

So now I've got a complete, stamped history, covering running service, brake fluid, and oil services, and even got some interim oil services from a specialist (every 6-7,000 miles) marked up too.

It probably won't matter much when I sell it in a few years with 100,000 miles on the clock, but I've always had a folder full of receipts, invoices & photos when I sell my cars.

Just going through this exact process!

I phoned BMW Vehicle Info Line 09062 090001 BE WARNED IT's £1/min!!!
Had to phone this to find out what dealers it's been to, as my local BMW couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me.

I'm posting a replacement service book up to Sandal Huddersfield as i'm down in essex, so hopfully will get it back stamped for their service.

Then got to post it off to Wakefield then Bolton!!!

But should then have a stamped up main dealer service

Another thing to remember, I'm of the understanding that a 'replacement' service book from BMW say's duplicate or something on every page. Doesn't look that good for re-sale?

Fleabay sometimes have original books crop up from time to time.

I will check mine but don't think it says duplicate :?

my dealer (Vines Redhill) sorted all the sending off etc for me...

The MINI one I got for my sister didn't....if that's any help

Nothing saying duplicate on mine - although I didn't ask them for a duplicate, I simply ordered a blank one from my local dealer.
