LOSING COOLANT!!!

Hi Guys,

Recently been having to keep topping up my coolant so thought I would take it to the garage today to see where the puddle in my undertray was coming from....

Turns out from what we could see it is the Thermostat housing and is making the block where it meets furry so it must have been doing this for a while :( So I spoke to the guy about it and he recommended I used K-Seal?? Surely on a Z4 this is not what you want? he said as the leak was only small I should not worry and run this through and it would seal it all up?
Is this right or should I start ringing round for a quote on changing this? I have never let the coolant drop by much so never had the light come on but I am very particular with my cars and have to have things perfect or they start to get to me!

So now I am thinking I would really like to get this fixed but what would you all recommend I do? Should I just replace the housing like this guy said as this seemed to be where the leak was from and then get the coolant changed at the same time?

What is the general cost you would expect this to be as the guy at the garage said it would be about £250-£300 does this sound right? Or would I get a better deal going to a BMW specialist?

I want to get it done properly but dont want to pay over the odds, also has anyone got a 'how to' on changing this thermostat as I have a couple of friends who would be capable of this if I gave them step by step instructions.

Thank you in advance for your help :)

You don't sound as though you trust the garage that looked at it. I'd suggest getting a second opinion. My BMW specialist (Phoenix motors) charge £55 per hour in labour iirc.

I do sort of trust him because he is a customer of mine and he seems genuine, but he did say to me that he uses the orange coolant rather than the blue BMW approved stuff?

I am wondering if by him saying use K-Seal if he thought the job would be difficult as looking at the thermostat it does look to be a tricky hard to reach place?

Get it sorted properly and use BMW coolant, it's not something to skimp on as you don't want to overheat.

Would this be suitable? Or should I change the thermostat at the same time?

I wouldn't buy something like that from ebay with unknown origin.

Try eurocarparts or similar if you going away from BMW original parts.

I used K-Seal before in one of my previous cars. It's a good short term measure, but only treats the symptoms, and puts off the inevitable. Good to see its sorted for a reasonable price
