Loose piece of metal behind disk

Evening all

This circular piece of metal has come loose on my e86 - it's the bit that sits behind the disk and I can move it with my had towards and away from the disk. It makes a constant rattling sound when driven.

Is this easy enough for me to sort or do I need to drop it off at a garage?

Thanks!

Is it just the dust shield? If so is it just bent?

Hi

I can "wobble" it backwards and forwards by a couple of millimeters by hand - this must be happening when I'm driving causing the rattling. I've checked the one on the opposite side and that one is fixed in place with no movement so I'm guessing a screw has come loose or similar?

Had same issue with mine recently where the dirt gaurd had rusted away. Had managed to previously use a washer to nip it back up, lasted a year, then back to square one :x . A new guard is about £28, bad news is the hub has to be removed. Plus you will probably require a new hub bearing as well when you reassemble. It's a couple of hours job unless the 10mm bolts which hold the dirt guard on are seized or rusted away, then the old bolts will need drilled out and the threads cleaned using a tap.

Ah not good! Garage it is! Assume i shouldn't be driving it either then? Is there risk it could come loose/break something else?

A classic example of bad BMW quality and bad design! Mine was really rattling over bumpy roads. I did try and bend it back a bit and reform it which helped. Shouldn't do much damage in short term, but would aim to get it fixed sooner than later.

Hmm how does bending help? If you can let me know what you did I'll give that a go

Not sure where your's has rusted away or how loose it actually is, but mine was corroded around the top bolt. I was able to bend or shall we say reform it away from the disk, enough to help stop it from hitting the disk at every little undulation on the road, only a short term fix

Couldn't you just liquid metal it back to the bolt head if the guard had rusted through and was rattling. Would need a ramp. Bit of a bodge right enough. :?

Couldn't liquid metal mine as the dust guard was too corroded. If it isnt too bad then as a temp fix it should work, so would a washer, again a temporaryproblem fix until the metal corrodes around the dust guard like it did on mine

Mine were the same before winter when I replaced all four, you can tie the top of the front guards back to the strut with a zip tie as a temporary measure.

Assume the wheel needs to come off for access? I'm also assuming I don't have a jack due to the run flats! Never checked?

Had a go at bending it - nothint happening there. It's moving back and forwards around 10mm and catching the disk at the front edge - based on that I don't want to drive it as I don't want to risk damaging the disk. Hopefully there will be a garage open next weekend I can use as I have zero time this week!

Try a washer first .remove wheel for access then unsrew the 2 bolts that you can get to at the front (it is a bit fiddley because of limited room) ,put an appropriate size washer between bolt and heat shield and tighten ,or as above tie wrap to strut for a quick temporary fix.
This is a very common problem of the shields rusting around where the bolt holes are, had to fix both mine on my Z and my old e46 330.

My Indy just recommended removal with intention to replace when the hubs needs to come off for future work/repairs. Obviously don't know when this would be but they think it should be fine.

I am sure I read on here they don't actually do a great deal anyway and that this wouldn't be a problem/other forum members have done the same?

Just serves as a dust shield (from the pads), so no won't cause you any other issues (I don't think!!). Like he said I'd keep in mind that it would need replacing, otherwise makes cleaning the wheel a bigger PITA!

Did your garage remove the hub or cut the new guard to fit it?

If they removed the hub How did they do this to prevent damage?

Interested as £100 is a lot better than the £300 I have in my head today get this done.

Thanks

I've replaced both these front shields on mine recently due to the same corrosion issues. Although what has been said about the hub possibly needing to be replaced after removal is correct, it isn't a given. In my case the hubs were re useable on both sides. I used cable ties to temporarily secure the shields until I got the replacements.

Took mine off today, as had a rattle too. 2 of the 3 bolt holes had rusted through. Taking it off involves removing the wheel and the disc and hub, but a bolt has seized on the brake caliper, and could I get the bolt out??? No!!! :headbang: :headbang:

I ended up using tin snips and cutting the cover off, which was a right pita, and took and hour and a half! Left it off for now, will get my Indy to put a new one on. Aluminium cover with steel bolts will always rust through, a plastic cover would be far better.

Good news, no rattle.
