Well looks like our planned continental railway trip to Odessa may have to be deferred, for the next 20 years..

I see the US high altitude drones that were flying over Ukrainian territory are now offshore but still monitoring…

Those sites can be fun. Almost as much fun as speculating on things with next to no real information aboutv them.

Makes me smile when the BBC wheel out all the retired military bods to give a prediction on how this is going to pan out

But I do agree with what has been said this morning that NATO needs to be mobilised now without delay to bolster the eastern Ukraine flank, it should have been done much sooner and too late now.

Having said that the scary prediction made this morning is our troops could end up in combat against Russia which really is unthinkable but quite possibly a real reality now.

Putin has a screw loose with completely opposite views to the west.

For those that may be interested the picture infers many things..

The US were providing NATO and I assume Ukraine with very detailed real time data on movements of ground troops, the Global Hawk has wide array of sensors (EO/IR, SARS, SIGINT) to see and listen, by patrolling up to the Russian border they could see many miles into Russia.

The fact that the planes moved out of Ukrainian airspace before the invasion started shows they knew when it started and what the likely threats for the plane were.

The fact they allowed the planes to be seen on a public radar feed rather than not indicated that this was deliberate move to show Russia they were there.

Of course we are all (bar a few) just observers..

Worrying times

For sure..Putin will be saying to himself 'this is not the end, it is not even the beginning of the end, it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning'

Georgia and the Baltic States are wondering when it will be their turn..

I’ve been skipping between BBC News channel and CNN on the TV all morning at work and the scale of this invasion is massive. Nationwide and by land, sea and air....he really isn't messing about

I fear the west has been caught napping and Putin knows this and is now exploiting its weakness. For me I lump Putin in the same club as Gadaffi and Hussain except he hides behind a mask of respectability.

That's kind of the whole point though isn't it?
Ukraine isn't in NATO, so NATO can't go into their Eastern flank.
A UN Peacekeeping Force may be able to, but politically that probably couldn't include any NATO members either.
To quote Captain Darling (Blackadder Goes Forth) - "Made a note in my diary this morning. Simply says 'Bugger!' "

Had an interesting chat with No.2 son this morning, who is on Typhoons at Coningsby.
If you live near there or Lossiemouth don't be surprised if the QRAs seem very busy. there's likely to be a lot of 'Bears' in the air off the coasts.

True, but NATO could amass its resources more on its Eastern flank bordering Ukrain, hopefully they are already doing this at least to show Putin the west isn't a push over. The economic sanctions are bordering laughable as a way to stop a lunatic on the march. The question is if he gets away with it when will he stop.

Been doing that myself. Didn't appreciate the scale when I first replied to this thread just hours ago. Is he expecting to march straight into Kiev in days? or does he plan to take the East and then start playing political games again?

From being a forceful powerful leader fifteen or so years ago, he has transposed into a very scary individual. Lets hope we can isolate him enough to stop this before too many people die. To say nothing of the economic fallout that is to come.

His game plan will be conventional in that he wants total control over Ukrainian affairs..he's flexible..he'll beat up parts of Ukraine (to try and avoid too much loss of Ukrainian blood for political reasons), then he'll ask the current administration to throw in the towel, if they refuse he'll just destroy everything in his path and take Kiev by force...simple!

Ah OK. NATO's Eastern flank; Ukraine's West? See what you mean now.

It does indeed look bad - drove home yesterday from Brum via the M50 and a few Chinnocks flying into Hereford.

He is not messing about and the issue is that NATO does not want a war and Biden is too soft - I wonder if Trump was there would he have gone in as he was unpredictable in how he would react.

Putin just want the old USSR back - he knows that Russia has no sphere of influence and to get it back he has to invade certain countries, Ukraine is the easiest target as its not in NATO
