Looking for alpha n support

hi all, I am after recommendations for someone to take a look at my current alpha n tune + karb setup.

I'm in surrey but happy to travel for the right person. assume a rolling road setup would be best? will give me an excuse to take a drive!

cheers

I'm intrigued. Who did the original tune and what's the issue you feel you have with it, and why not go back to them?
I had mine done about 13yrs ago on the south coast with a lot of time on dyno but maybe there's better options these days.

Hi Tom, I've bought my car only recently complete with a karb air box and alpha n tune from evolve I believe. Car drives brilliantly.

Did my first track day this week at Brands Hatch which was great fun, equally terrifying however it seems that power would be slightly delayed at exactly the same point on the circuit each and every lap. very strange so I thought it may be the tune. car performed well in all other respects.
Coming out of Paddock Hill Bend and up Hailwood Hill if you know the circuit.

Can’t go wrong with Josh at Severn Tuning. I don’t think anyone knows the MSS70 as well as him. As a fellow Z4 enthusiast and owner, he will give you white glove service you won’t get from other tuners.

Additionally, if you want to try a pedigree name in BMW tuning, Randy from Epic Motorsports offers Alpha-N. That’s who I went with and my CSL tuned car drives flawlessly both on street & track.

I'm new here But for what it's worth I also can vouch for Josh at Severn Tuning working with him right now Upgrading my car with new injectors pulley and Water/methanol injection.

Martyn at Ecuworx is also worth a shout - he tuned my car for my Eventuri a few years ago, and is working with me currently on my Airbox tune now. Really pleased so far, the car has never felt better!

Thanks all appreciate the pointers.

Is the general consensus that a rolling road / Dyno tune is needed for a good outcome?

My view is it's a nice to have not a need to have, but happy to be corrected on that.

Provided your datalogging software is logging the right datapoints, doing your WOT pulls, or colleting part-throttle / part-load data on a dyno or on the road I can't see makes a huge difference :) to me there's a benefit in doing it on the road in that you're driving, so you can provide feedback on how the car actually feels...

A good OTS tune should be fine but custom dyno tune will surely extract every bit of hp and optimize the tune. Ideally your tuner will offer you both.

I didn’t think OP was differentiating data log vs dyno; rather canned map vs custom.

Between data logging vs dyno, both have their advantage. Data logging allows for more driving scenarios to be considered. But with dyno, you truly get to ring the motor which is tough to do on public roads. And many times, folks are trying to resolve some kind of dip or flat spot around the low 7k range. Plus end of day, it answers the most important question, what gains, if any did you get with said upgrade.

How many rpm where you at? Was it pulling timing?

Does it do on the road up a hill if you get it hot enough?

Before you change the map I'd try and sort it, my vote is either the coil packs or the knock sensors, the rear ones by the bulkhead cook and go off. I had timing pull sometimes on alphaN map, replaced the lot and problem solved

Describe the the section of the track. Hi speed, low speed, off camber, etc.? If it’s happening every time in same spot I wonder if it’s DSC intervening and cutting power. Have you tried turning traction fully off?

Hi guys, sorry haven't checked back on this in a while.
It happens at the same point exiting the corner after the straight downhill and then up towards druids.
Marked in yellow below.

@3002 tii I haven't tried traction control off. I've got another day at Abingdon which is obviously flat and will give that a go.
@RedUn - will look into the coil packs and knock sensors.

Could be fuel starvation, long right hander. Keep an eye on your fuel level when you're experiencing it, I've heard anecdotally at least that fuel starvation is an issue when the tank gets less than half full. Can't say I've experienced it but then I've not really been doing tracks where there are longer high speed corners...

I was going to mention fuel starvation too, but mine's been through paddock many times. Had you said after the old hairpin at Donington I would definitely have as my car has lost power there a few times as it approaches a quarter tank. Thing is you really do notice it and obviously it wont do it all the time so I can't believe its that? Was the tank fullish at some point?

With regards to looking at the tune, what have evolve said?
I think the problem you might face getting anyone else to look at it, is that the tune has probably been locked by evolve.

For posterity if it helps anyone in the future I think it was the DSC kicking in.

Had a whole day at Abingdon and not a blip. Car behaved impeccably, unfortunately couldn't make up for the drivers lack of skill.

Interesting, glad you've figured it out! Driver skill is the fun bit to work on, I'm distinctly average but still derive great pleasure from chipping away at my car control :)

They have a very sensitive traction control, I usually turn it off as it's annoying as hell, you can feel it holding back even when the light doesn't flicker on the dash, old skool nannies
