Look what the postman brought me

I had one of these years ago. I loved it but lost it moving house. I think i might order a new one. So much better than the Micky Mouse ones car manufactures put in the boot.

More over analysing, BUT also practical experience would see me telling you NOT to use one of those.

The problem is, the angle.. It means that as you apply force, as the angle is not 90 degrees, it tends to push the socket to one side, which has couple of effects. Firstly it is trying to "angle" the socket off the fastener (bolt) head which can lead to slippage or rounding of the head. Secondly, as alloys tend to have "recessed" bolts due to the thicker hub, there is a chance of contact with the wheel and damage to the finish.

Personally, I have always used a breaker bar with a plastic sheathed deep impact (oeerrr missus!) socket, as more of the torque is applied to the fastener with it being at 90 degrees, that is of course until my new impact wrench arrived, but that's another story. :)

Lol. We're definitely falling into 2 camps here aren't we.
Someone should conduct a poll.......*cough*....Marlon...

:D I realise Polls just confuse the hell out of me - my latest 'what colour calipers' has left me completely undecided  I'm currently thinking Blue, which wasn't even an option on my Poll :headbang:

hehe you should def go with your own choice on caliper colours imo. bmw use blue too so.....
i'd be interested in seeing the outcome on a poll re the wheel nut bar personally.
I know ive had rather amateurish luck with those nasty torx bolts but i do actually have over 20 years engineering experience in nuclear and aerospace and my instincts tell me that applying an abstract force to any mechanical system will have some detrimental effect. i.e. over time, i can't believe that tightening and retightening at let's say 30-40 degrees abstract to the thread direction isn't going to introduce some form of wear to either the wheel pin thread or the bolt thread.
i don't think it's over-analysis and those that say that are relying on their own experience so far.
Good risk-management will go to the nth degree in covering all the bases and I think considering the benefits, disbenefits or risks may be useful for some in evaluating whether to buy or use one of these.
We're all here to help and advise each other and lord knows I've certainly garnered a huge amount of practical advice from you lot already and I genuinely think it warrants worthwhile debate if there is a conflict of opinion, however small or relatively inconsequential the subject.
Jus sayin

Thanks

A breaker bar is the way to go - and a quality one at that!

I used a "snap on" bar with a 3.0m scaffold bar + my 80kg hanging on the end to break a loctited 40mm thread - not how a tool should be treated I know - but it's still straight and in use today !

if these bars are so bloody dangerous and unsafe to use i wonder why they sell thousands of them everywhere daily... :fuelfire:

No one said they were dangerous/unsafe, just that they aren't ideal in the way that the force is applied to the fastener. I have personally had one slip off a 19mm nut on an old ford with steel wheels, which is why I would never use one again. For maximum torque applied where it's needed, a proper breaker bar, with the pivot as close to the fastening as possible will always be the most effective way if an impact wrens is not available.

I know I need a life but

I didn't think it was wise using copper grease on bolt threads as it alters the torque value, ie you need to tighten the up more to get to the required torque :?

Tim.

Same here Tim.

Ive never used a tourque setting on a wheel nut or bolt in all my 34 years of mucking around with cars , I've never had a wheel fall off , come loose or refuse to budge after I tightened it , I'm ok with it , jeez , I can remember not being able to afford a torque wrench when I was a boy and I tightened the cylinder head down on a 2ltr pinto ford engine with a short t bar and a cement mixer handle , it was fine :) and yes , I did re use the old head bolts

I've got the same tee shirt albeit with a few more years !
I don't think I would like to do those tasks on one of todays sophisticated engines and gear boxes tho.

You guys need to stop over analysing everything in life and just enjoy yourselves
I have had one of these for possibly about 18 years and is great.
If you cant get the bolt undone, extend the bar. Obviously dont use it extended to tighten the bolts.

+1

+2 i use one like the link & must have switched 40/50 sets of alloys with it
Marlon has been on the course eh mate :D its all about "feel"

Make that +3. Dare I say without giving someone heart failure, I've used a standard wheel brace slipped inside a 3ft scaffold tube for the last 30 yrs without a problem  :D

Not at all, merely commenting on the amount of opinionated and enthusiastic discussion raised and not admitting to any form of mistake whatsoever.
Ben g i feel like you've developed something of an indifference towards me and my posts?
Somewhat unfortunate and not a little bit childish and a bit unfriendly on your part in my opinion.
Apologies if i've rubbed you up the wrong way if that's the case and maybe you can reply here or pm me to dicuss further if you prefer.
I'm very appreciative of the comments, assistance and general friendliness i've experienced thus far from this forum and hope that continues. However, your negative comments and snitty ripostes serve to diminish and spoil that a little bit.
I see that you have been an active and contributing member here for a lot longer than i have and i respect that fact. However, if my posts annoy or offend you in some way i would prefer that you refrain from commenting on them or maybe ignoring them altogether if possible?
