It is still in place, the military get warned about it if we breach the Official Secrets Act. Wouldn't really apply here though. This is quite simply a crime. Horrific and disgusting but a crime all the same.
Funny thing is, in what these morons call their homeland, they would be laughed at, disgraced and then be beheaded themselves for crimes against Islam.
I've been following this post but not commenting for a while as I couldn't really think of anything worth while saying. What I have been reading though is starting to frustrate me a little. This isn't about what happened nearly 100 years ago, lets not try to politicise this whole incident. These 2 haven't got a damn clue about what the Taleban are fighting about, they haven't got a clue about the sectarian violence across Iraq or Africa. This was quite simply 2 utter morons who've been convinced by inciters of racial hatred that this is what Allah would have wanted.
This is using religion and politics as an excuse for hatred and violence.
If anyone starts to feel the need to blame the security services then remember how hard their job is. They're so restricted by legislation and political bullsh1t that it is incredibly difficult to stop something like this. If they arrest too early, then they get sued to hell and back. If they go too late, then the media and politicians impose punishment and new legislation on them as a way of finding someone to blame. I don't know the full ins and outs, if you think for a minute the media will uncover anything truthful or accurate about it then you're deluded.
This was a tragedy that could only have been prevented if they hadn't allowed themselves to become radicalised, if someone had had the influence over them to see that they were being primed to commit an evil act.

Richard, it was a political protest articulated through violence, standard terrorist method.
Given these people are unequivocally and without doubt the murderers of the soldier - through multiple witness testimony and video of the event - they should be banged up for the rest of their natural lives without right of appeal or parole. Preferably in a jail somewhere unpleasant rather than our cushy jails. If the option was there, they should be hung. Nothing to do with their religion or politics, or the manner in which they butchered the victim, simply the fact that they committed pre-meditated murder and IMO they have forfeited their right to remain members of society, and possibly the human race.

I'll admit I'm finding my opposition to the death penalty severely tested in this case but my first point is what keeps me believing it's wrong even with these two animals.

But justice is the bigger beast. It is vengeance plus. In theory you get your vengeance, your recompense and a civil society without feuds. Some times you even get rehabilitation, which is a big bonus.
Punishment of communities for the misbehaviour of an individual is unjust.
You know that really.
