Little rev

Driving home today noticed something strange. Every time i came to a stop, put gearbox into neutral, load off engine, the engine gave a little rev up, dropped below 500rpm then settled back at 500-600 tickover.
At first i thought i was catching the throttle with my foot, so heard before i looked at what rev. counter was doing.

First thought was the vanos solenoid playing up.
Just thought i'll pop the reader on, see what it says.

I had this a few times - I have since pulled out the vanos solenoids cleaned them, replaced the seals and its cleared up. No idea if this is related but might be worth a try?

Yes may be worth doing anyway - the general consensus seems to be to replace them at around 100k - its a fairly simple job to remove them although small hands do help!

OK
Will order a couple.......and a small child.

Following this. I've had similar symptoms with the inclusion of engine stalling when in neutral. Doesn't seem to stall when a/c is off, just drop right down then recover. Had maf error, can't remember the code, been wondering what it might be. Don't think the vanos has been changed and on 97k now so might give this a shot

I will try just cleaning at first with some maf sensor cleaner.
I do have lying around some cheap after market solenoids, but they could cause more trouble.

Splendid…not an expert on N52 vanos or M54 but at 96k miles showing your car a bit of love would probably be a good idea..

Love and Italian tunes are not mutually exclusive :tumbleweed:  :driving:

Oh don't worry, she gets what she asks for and a fair bit extra. May not get cleaned as much as she should being on the road and my daily, but a bit stuck in that department

Well this came up on obd

Seems first thing to check vacuum leaks.
One video shows the valvetronic gasket leaking.
Might tie into the slight oil pooling i see below it that has been there quite some time.

Think it's time to change gasket.
Also see a slight difference in what the valvetronic is asking for and seeing.

Has your economy dipped? If it’s the eccentric shaft sensor that can happen as well as the stumble at idle.

We have one or two posting on the forum

Well did something else today, as i accelerated hard and changed first to second, the car acted like i hadn't enough revs, like a learner driver causing the clutch to judder on take up. OK rest of the day.

Bought a can of contact cleaner £6 from Halfords and gave the maf sensor a good clean.
Seems to have done the trick and car bit perkier.

Fitted also today the servo motor gasket. Bit of a crap design as usual seems overly complicated, no wonder they leak.
Not much surface area for rubber to sit. I put a very thin layer of sealant on.
Yet to drive after fitting.

Probably not needed fitted two new vanos solenoids. Car done 95k so don't mind.

All running well.
Bit weird seems easier to shift into 2nd gear, perhaps the revs hang a bit more during change.

So today plugged in obd reader and noted the valvetronic was saying what it wanted and what it had was different.
Been like that for a long time, years in fact.
Foxwell gives option to reset it. So followed instructions, basically ignition on 10 seconds then off.
Started run fine.
So went further and found "adaptive (something a other) reset".
I thought this was just for auto boxes.
So did that.

Well ebrake warning came up, brake symbol with"!" mark, then engine on reduced power warning.
Bugger, what have i done.
So restarted engine couple of times, all cleared.
Cleared fault codes.

Drove car home...goes like stink. :D
I couldn't stop putting my foot down.
In fact have to be a bit careful when i put my foot down initially in sport.
