LED Headlight bulbs

I imagine there are lots of different types of bulbs available.

I wanted a H7 which was about 6500k and bright enough to see the damn road without blinding oncoming traffic.

I tried most of the wanabee's xenon gas crap even 100w with relay. I resorted to using HID with ballast and thats when the problem arose.

Not by me but a previous owner had fitted different headlamps with angel eyes from 2xcite. These are very cool headlights but have a projector which is smaller than most.
The HID bulbs are much too long and hit the shield inside the projector. Mind you, I was warned. Back to the drawing board.

At last, I contacted a Company in Hong Kong who use a new Cree chip from Philips. These chips produce 4500lm EACH, and are around 6000 - 6500k. They have a small fan to aid cooling and a flat ballaster. Even though they supplied top quality resistors for a couple of quid or so, I did not need them on the Z4.

They are really easy to fit and give a very bright, crisp, direct white light. Not sure if oncoming traffic can see it but they give a very cool tint of deep blue at the top edge of the light which reflects on the road signs. I have never seen such power from an LED before. These really are top quality and very cool.

The company is called "U-Kars Store" they are a very sound company, extremely helpful and delivery was only 6 days (though it states could be much longer)

Output pictures? Interested, but worried about the longevity, though that's usually not an issue for LEDs. Just wondering about the validity because 4500lumens is more than an HID kit!

Will these fit a boring old not modified or special in any way 2.0 that currently has two small guttering candles for headlights? It certainly doesn't have any of those fancy pants xenon lamps.

Just being unreasonably hopeful I expect.

Hope some knowledgeble person responds positively to this as I would be interested.

Here are some (quite unprofessional lol) photo's of the LED lights. The 4th photo is against my fence & the 5th inside my carport/tent, the 6th is on a back road.

These will fit any headlamp that has a H7 (or H4). Mine are projector, not sure what standard lamps have, but it doesn't really matter as they will fit.

I don't know what the H4 output looks like.

Thank you.

I shall update the thread with my results when I get round to it? Don't hold your breath. I am slow moving.

Will you face similar issues as retro fitting HID when it comes to passing a MOT ? and do they simply plug in to the existing wiring ? I'm about to change the low beam bulbs on mine and see how i get on, if they're still crap then these or a HID kit might be next.

Iv'e heard so many story's of people having problems especially with MOT's. I tried the HID but they would'nt fit in my projectors. I have fitted them to lots of different cars ranging from 4000K TO 15000K. I'm glad they didn't as the LED's look much better. Don't know if I'll have problems with the MOT but tbh I can't really see there being a problem as they are a concentrated beam and certainly don't blind oncoming trafic or even show any where near the windscreen.
My camera didn't really show the quality of light and the 3rd picture is no thing like as glaring when I face the lights.

Yes, they simply plug into the existing wiring (plug) but you do have to fit the slimline ballast somewhere. I bolted it just behind the wiring.

Great topic!

Thanks for posting pics. It's amazing to see how much bulb technology has progressed. A few years ago, led bulbs looked great but had awful output.

Might opt to experiment with a set for my auxiliary lights!

Quite streaky but I think that's due to your projectors and not the bulbs themselves. When the prices of these matches HIDs, I think I'll make the switch. Right now they still come at a bit of premium, although the instant on is a perk + I'm guessing the reliability compared to a set of janky HIDs.

I researched several types of LED's and found there are good & bad (more bad than good unfortunately) which is why I conversed with the suppliers first.

There are, what seems like more powerful LED's available but none with 4500lm for each unit, so be careful. This is why Iv'e posted this article, (I'm not on commission or anything lol) to help prevent people from falling for the crap stuff.

Hope all this helps

A bit late in the day, but I see from this site that there exists a Philips LED H7 replacement. These are specified as 2500 lumen, which compares favourably with the 1500 lumen of Philips X-treme.

The driver seems to be in a plastic case 4.5 cm x 2.5 cm x 1.5 cm. The cables enter the case via what look like substantial grommets, so I'd guess the effective length will be more like 7-8 cm. I haven't yet explored the Z4 headlamp housing, so I don't know how possible it will be to accommodate the driver case.

Has anybody tried these? Does anyone know anything about Horizon LEDs? I assume that the product is dependable, being Philips.

I can't find anything from Philips saying these exist. I'd contact Philips direct to confirm they make such a product, doesn't seem legit to me... happy to be proved wrong though.

My only concern with these would be if they need their own fans, how much heat do they generate and how durable is the non-OEM headlight casing to high temperatures?

I say this as I considered Xtcite headlights a few years back when I got my car but when I called them for more info they did not recommend retrofitting them with HiD's so I went down the donor lights and cut and shut route.
