Lay-up or sell-up

That’s the dilemma I’m faced with. :(

Clearly now is not the best time of year to sell, but as the poor thing hasn’t been out for weeks now and today I have SORNed it, my thoughts are whether it is worth me keeping it. A shame really as I love the car and have just serviced, MOTd and bought new rear tyres for it. I covered just 1500 miles in it between MOTs and my garage space is now in demand for other things. I can’t bring myself to leave it outside all winter unused.

Pic just to try to convince myself not to do anything drastic!

Do you need the cash? If not then park it up over winter, 4 months or so won’t make any difference to the car parked outside, then see what next year brings, mines parked outside all the time, more chance of it getting damaged in my garage with all the crap I’ve got, even used mine Christmas Day

Why would you not use it? Mine is my daily driver.
Unfortunately it’s simply not suitable for my daily commute/work use (have a 4x4 for that) and the family estate car is for lugging the kids and all their stuff around. That leaves just fine evenings/weekends for a blast out on my own or with my son. Opportunities for this have been in short supply and not just for weather or lockdown reasons.

I guess the cash would be useful and I kind of think it might be better used on something other than a long term SORNed or underused car. Parking outside is possible but then it occupies one of the spaces for the two other cars in the family.

Is it worth mentioning some details about the car and maybe someone will make your mind up for you

Sell some of the stuff you don't uses anymore and put towards a winter storage space. Once you sell the car you will be kicking yourself. Or look around for a space to rent for the winter?

I can understand you predicament when you have youngsters. Been there, t-shirt and all that. Only you know what is best for you and your family. I can't really offer too much advice except if you sell you might just have a tinge of regret a few years down the line. Depends how much you love the car you have. How much do you love it?

It’s a tough one, having a toy car that you don’t get much time to enjoy...

How much would you miss it? ‘Vs’ how much easier might your life be without having to accommodate it?

There seem to be a number of people looking for 3.0i’s right now, so it might still be decent time to sell as you’re not talking Coupe or M’ prices.

I’m lucky in that I can keep hold of a toy car without parking drama’s, but I also find limited time to enjoy mine with two youngish daughters and only one passenger seat!

I’m considering selling up myself and finding a 125i convertible again, not as much fun as the Z, but quick enough when remapped and can accommodate 3 passengers not one. :?

I do enjoy it very much, when I get the chance to use it. If it goes I will miss it when the weather is warm and sunny. But even then it spends too much time tucked away in the garage and not enough doing what it should be doing. I’m thinking that it’s simply the wrong time of life (young family etc) to be disappearing off on my own for hours driving just for the sake of it.

That is why I was lucky with the 944 Turbo. Little seats in the back for little people. Still miss that car. A shame it ended the way it did.

Well, you can always come back to it when the children are that much older. i.e. get something else. Children and good times with them come first.

I think with this post you have answered your question. You can always buy another two seater convertible when the time is right,

I was in a similar position to you except I do have a warm garage...I've still listed it on the forum anyway. If I don't get the price I want then I will be more than happy to keep it for another year - a low mileage and looked after e85 3.0 in manual isn't depreciating so I wouldn't worry about letting it sit there.

If you are undecided I'd be inclined to keep it - it's not like it will dpreciate over the winter, and now isn't the best time of year to be selling a Roadster.

Then again if you do sell and in the future wish you hadn't, you ought to be able to find another.

How much do you enjoy on those occasions you have taken it for a blast?

It's clear, to me at least, reading this thread that you need to keep the car until next spring and decide. Wrong time to sell and you clearly don't want too, so that's a no brainer.

I think I’ve decided it does need to go, but I’m not desperate so will probably post up an ad soon and see what the response is. If there’s little interest or just silly offers then I’ll withdraw the ad and it try again in Spring. It’s tucked away in the garage on a trickle charger, so is coming to no harm sat there for a few more months.

I get that this is not a good time to sell a roadster, but there’s no harm in testing the water. It might just catch the eye of someone looking for this very car!
