Laptop Crashed - HELP! Any IT gurus??

Have you tried rebuilding the master boot record?

In command prompt try the following in that order one after the other
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Will give that a go after the re install, would prefer to get old windows back

On a windows repair your stuff should hopefully still be there. A full reinstall will probably wipe them.
There's a program that you can use to recover data as its still on your hard drive in a layer, its just been written over the top.

I've used this before and it works.

Looks as though you might be on the right track

From one of those it has happened to before, get a portable hard drive when you are up and running again. I have two. I only store software on my laptop. All my files I store on external drive and I back this up periodically to the other larger external drive.

GLWT

P.S. anybody notice the clock on the server is still on summer time?

this thread seems to be of people with similar probs to you:

and this one

sounds like you have altered your boot.ini. file and this talks about how to rebuild it

Cheers guys. Got windows re installed, pictures and music are safe and accessible.

Main problem is that all my program files are no longer installed - Chrome, MS Office, iTunes etc

Plus the graphics are goosed. Can't get higher than 1240x860 :(

You need to reinstall the updated driver for your graphics card.

Its annoying when you have to reinstall all your other stuff as well.

I'd back it all up if I were you! Glad it's fixed now.

I'm a consultant for an IT company but I may have to put some of you on a commision for answers basis as the turn around time and responses are great!!!

We are not based in India so we can skip all the "is the power on" type questions :D

I bought some Acronis software to image my Windows based machines to network shares, very useful stuff and dirt cheap.

wooooahhhh there, is the power on and have you turned it on and off again probably solves 30% of all calls !!!

We do quite a lot with Acronis but my works mainly with larger infrastructure so a lot of virtualisation/cloud and storage where although acronis does have a product it's not up to the market leaders imho!

If you want bargain storage/replication etc buy a couple of Qnap boxes, cheap as chips and bloody fast!

Couldn't agree more. I used to work as an IT manager and some of the support here is tremendous.

BTW Adamski, have you considered investing in Winodws 7, it is far superior to XP and Vista especially with respect to fault recovery. I personally wouldn't bother with Windows 8 yet, unless you have a new fangled touch screen

Andi.

PS Pants - turn it off and on is a god send :D

The IT Crowd had that down spot on!!! Also the IT boss who knows nothing about IT really, I see that all the time!

best thing for a heavy used windows pc is a reinstall every year or so. amazing how much performance can be brought back :D

Re installed all drivers. Should I just delete the Windows.old folder once I've got everything I need from it, pictures, music etc?

You can copy your stuff back from your old users folder, including desktop icons etc.

Cheers to all you guys for the help! I'm back on Chrome, have my pics etc all back in their folders, anti virus installed etc

Next up:
Skype
iTunes - no use in having music on Media Player

Can I just delete the old Windows folder now?

It is not used by anything. If you have lifted anything you want from there, you can delete it.
