You did try the F8 action? You must hammer the key whilst the system is booting up and keep doing it until it displays a menu of about 6 options or so. Safe mode should be on that list.

If safe mode fails, then it is bad ...

When re-installing windows from recovery disk, you won't lost data, just windows settings and you might have to re-install applications.

Ok, I'll take the plunge and re install when this chkdsk /f thing is finished

Edit - WAIT! Progress??? It says its fixed something?

That's progress. If it blue screens again, get the first line written down, you can get quite a lot of info from that

No progress - still wont boot. Re tried booting in safe, safe with command prompt. No joy - runs through script of windows files then dies.

Blue screen only appears for split second but will try to find out what it says.

Going to go for full windows re install as per pvr suggestion now.... not hopeful 8)

It's moving the previous version of Windows to windows.old

Will I be able to access all my photos and music? Or have I lost it all

If it won't start in safe mode, you're on a hiding to nothing. Over the top install next best bet. Then just say feck it, format and reinstall

The files should still be there.

Unlikely you will lose them unless all that chkdsk'ng has found some corruption on the part of the drive your "stuff" is on. Data recovery is relatively simple with Windows, even if the OS has gone on holiday like yours.

You do of course, errm, backup your files regularly don't you :poke:

I could have sworn 'Startup Repair' was introduced in Vista. Sounds like it could have fixed this issue as it's likely a faulty boot sector.
Maybe even a rebuild of the BCD might have fixed it.

Ah well, we'll never know now...
