Kind of wished is gone for the 3l

The cost difference is justified by the extra power/ enjoyment imo. Not to mention the 3.0 can be pretty economical when you need it to be.

I would have been happy with the 2.0 having come from a 1.6 focus zetec... but having driven around in a 3.0si for a couple of years now, I'm thinking I'd struggle with a 2.0 - which is a shame as my plan had been to switch to the 2.0L E89...

Funny you say that, I had a 63 plate E89 20i sdrive sport auto as a demo car for two weeks prior to picking up the 3.0si.

Interesting, how did you find that in comparison to the 3.0si?

Intending to do test drives in the coming weeks on the various E89s. I've had the coupe for a couple of years now and always worked on the basis I'd switch to a deep sea blue E89 with the smaller engine, but I've grown rather fond of having the extra grunt. My coupe's only done 33k so it's gonna take a good E89 to tempt me away, something even more special if I'm dropping a chunk of performance...

The 3.0si feels quicker for sure, which is it on paper by 0.9 seconds.

The E89 did have a lovely sound track though with the turbo noise and the exhaust burble as well. Everytime you revved from idle to about 3k and let it drop back down again it would burble. The burble 'under pressure' during a foot flat acceleration was gorgeous also.

The interior and equipment on the E89 were very nice also and it was a pleasure to drive. The 3.0si feels a bit more brutal and raw sports car.

You lose boot space on the E89 also when the roof is down which was definitely noticeable.

The 8 speed sport auto box was nice though, responded well and had no issue with it.

I found the 3.0i to be a great engine. Powerful enough to pin you in your seat in 2nd gear, but economical enough to get 35mpg+++ on a long run.

I regularly got 30 mpg when hooning.

Don't know how some folks only manage 25mpg with a 3.0i.... I got 25mpg average from a 3.2 S54 engine at the weekend over 350 miles. And it was a spirited drive too ;)

I get 25 mph around town driving, stop and go along with quick blasts on country roads where I live, but I'm getting more like 32 mpg on interstate driving with cruse control and that's with the smaller US gallons too.

Get the 3.0, then at least you have the option of the ///M later..

I'd appreciate my ///M more if i had done so ... sadly if i want more powarrhhhh now ... the only option now is to go for a non-Z4 beast unless i go super-modding. :(

EDIT: plus - in my experience of toying with a few 3.0's on motorways, they arent exactly slow! The M makes you complacent, you forget that ~265(?)bhp is ... more than most cars on the road!

one of the things that made the 3.0ltr popular is the auto box - this is the best engine with an auto. if the M came in an auto the 3.0ltr would not be as popular as it is - and I would have one.

That's a fair point - if you need/want an auto, a 3L is as far as you can climb up the engine ladder

I do like the 3.0si with Auto, the box handles is well from what I've seen so far, and the kick down as always is just fun :D

Same with anything, once you've got used to the power you have.
I've got a 3.0si but got a massive itch for an //M at the mo, even though I could do without the running costs! You always want the next best thing in the range, enjoy what you have and be happy with your choice :)

This
Enjoy the summer trade up next year.

That's a interesting point I love a manual box but the manual box in the Z4M is a little questionable, I have the auto in my 330i and if you are taking it steady it's a lovely combo but its not quite so good when you ask the gearbox to work.

I think the 3.0 litre would be great with a manual as its a fizzy sweet revving engine so I think I would maybe enjoy the engine more with a manual but as a slight compromise the auto/3.0 is a nice combo and in the 330i the auto out sold the manual by a mile...but I am baffled as to why if I am honest in a 5 series/7 series I could understand why but not the 3 series.

From reading on here though it seems many owners are extremely happy with the auto/3.0 combo in the zed.

Don't get me wrong I really enjoy the 2l bit a part of me wishes I'd have gone for something more powerful. How much better is the 3l in your opinion?

I rate the 2l 8/10

I got the 2.5 and wished I'd got the 3.0! Now I'm after a 335 m sport and will probably wish I'd bought an M when I get there!

Just enjoy your time with what you've got, you won't regret it so much with the top down on a summer hoon! ;-)

Also - you're much more likely to drive the 2.0 on the edge than the 3.0, so you'll improve as a driver rather than relying on raw acceleration to get you down B-roads fast! :D

I used to have a great time driving military LDV convoy vans. felt like a 1.0l diesel but still coaxed 90mph out of it and drifted it round corners at oakhampton camp ;)

There's a 3.0 i and a 3.0 Si, there are a few posts on the difference, if you're going for a roadster, there is a choice of both, but the coupe was only made with the 3.0 Si ( and the M)
From my experience - 2.0 = fun
3.0 = very swift - with a choice of rawness, by removing the sponge(s) in the Sound Generator Pipe
M = :crazydude:

Averaged 39.5mpg in the 21.5mile drive from BMW Batemans back to Barrow earlier. Computer usually says about 30 when I've it not reset it for a while, excellent MPG for a 3.0 beast IMO.

I bought mine for the engine, never considered anything less than the 3.0 - (I would have had the ///M but for the bastard £500 road tax they incur. Sports cars should make a great noise and go well too. Buy one and enjoy it now before the taxman/nanny state/Eco warriors finally take over.....

Oi... there's another, somewhat more exclusive car, that you're forgetting about... :poke:

Unless, of course, you're suggesting that the 3.0L is better/more desirable than the Alpina?

In which case.... and the lord shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand to do, until thou be destroyed...

Isn't the alpina just a 2.0 liter in a mini skirt? :poke:
