What about the Audi A5 ?

I've gone off Audi since the LED daytime running lights are in, getting a bit to fussy looking for my taste, an older shape RS6 Avant though .....

I'm a basic guy so need a basic looking car e.g. 2 seats + small + fast = Z4MC or ... dog/kid carrying big box on wheels + (you've guessed it) preferably fast + practical engine (optional for me, probably not for the wife :) ) = ??

It's certainly not hard on the eye I'll give you that :)

I'll assume that IB Z4M trying to hide behind the 1 series is yours? :) Looks great!

Oh yes, we needed something more practical too.

Let me present: My wife's car:

A wagon or 4x4 is rubbish :)

Yep, if considering the non-SUV route the 5 series is an estate that is my top preference, I like the shape and straight forward interior, good diesel engines. Would love to be able to get a 35D engine as the second/family car.

Must start thinking more sensibly though, a 25D and keep the Z4MC = a good combination I think.

I'm trying to convince my wife that's it's best if we change her Mini Cooper for a bigger family car :D ... although she seems to have her eye on a Countryman, will have to convince her it's not big enough for dogs + kids :)

I could be wrong (and frequently am) but I'm quite sure the DRLs can be turned off via the in-car software in the Audi's. I think the A5 and the A5 Sportback (the 5-door one) are the nicest cars in their range at the moment. Excluding the R8 obviously!

Other options:
- would a 3-series be big enough? 330d or even 335d in Touring format could be fun...
- going for a more traditional family waggon and ignoring the badge on the front: new-shape Octavia vRS Estate - very good car

And I'd imagine a Countryman wouldn't really give a great amount of space - it's not that big is it?

Touring extremely small in the back, only suitable for small children. I moved to the X5 from the 3 touring because of it.

a 5 series estate would be a very nice car, i went for the golf on its physical size, for a small car it as a relatively big booot, big enough for my tools

Saw a new X5 recently with the LED corona rings (angel eyes). Have to say they looked a bit on the blue side to me... :?

look at the tourag but can't see the point of something that big that seats only 5 ........... Discovery 3 for me.. fantastic stablemate to a zed.
