Key central locking issue

Always give them the opportunity to make good, and then give them one more chance, telling them that you'll deal with BMW instead of them.

Exactly

Well that was weird. All booked in for Friday but thought I try disconnecting the battery for a few hours first, resetting the system. Before I reached for the spanners I figured I'd maybe give the pairing routine one last try so got in the car and closed the door.

Ignition on then off and key out. Hold down lock button then press unlock button 3 times before releasing lock button.

It worked! I don't know what was different from when I tried at the weekend more than a few times but I don't care! Quickly paired the new key too so now have 2 x working keys!!! :)

Guess thats what's what I get for buying a 16 year old car who is pretty set in her single key ways ;)

Result! I work on 'puters for a living. Sometimes stuff stops working, you work for hours trying to fix it, come in the next day and it works. Sometimes it's best not to worry too much why, but be thankful it is....

That or Microsoft wrote the code for the keys :scratchhead:

Probably what the dealer would have done and charged you for.

Like computers, these things need a reboot once in a while, although luckily not quite so often

Cheers gents. Must have been a 'puter issue of some sort but to say I'm beyond chuffed is an understatement. Going to check they both still work tomorrow before calling to cancel the diagnosis session on Friday.

So I thought I'd double check both keys still worked before cancelling my BMW diagnosis session.

Old key doesn't operate central locking but new one does?! Tried repairing again starting with original key. Paired fine. Then did the new key straight away. This one paired too but old key stops working?!

In two minds on cancelling the session tomorrow.

Update: called to cancel my session and head service guy (after first offering me a job!) said if I try again but don't put the second key in the ignition I should be good to go.

did you get this sorted then?

Nice work Inks, I still want to come out in/see the lovely breadvan. Always wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

RJS - absolutely mate!

srhutch - Sort of. Called service guy I've been dealing with to cancel and told him what happened. He applauded my efforts and said that when I come to pair the second key, not to put it in the ignition. Basically the first key inserts to tell the car that this is a new pairing and creates a random code. Second key and key press routine is just an additional copy and if you insert into the ignition first you end up starting the process again - hence just one key only ever working! Shall be sorting sometime this weekend.
