K&N 57i vs panel filter

Hi All

First posting on the forum - but have been making the most of your joint knowledge for some time ( ta)..

Have a very early 2.5, which i love and have decided to make a couple of small improvements, nothing significant, am thinking an exhaust back box for a slightly sportier sound ( want to hear that engine better) and a 57i kit. Has anyone got any experience of fitting 57i's to their z4, does it make much difference or for the money am i better just going with an improved panel filter?

I have a fast road prep'd Mk1 mx5 which has benefited from the induction kit, but took some fettling as the originally gave it a very bad flat spot, also used to have a boxster and was warned away from fitting an induction to kit to it as it just messed with the AFM..

Any advice much appreciated

Andy

welcome- try fitting the sound generator from the 3.0 instead- no performance gain or more importnatly loss but much increased sound.

I looked into the sound generator, but the problem is it only increase the noise in the cabin from what I understand.

I would stay away from an induction kit unless you go for a full CAI system. There are expenssive for the Z4 I think.

A filter pannel may improve noise slightly but probably won't give you any power!

The BMW airbox and induction is about as good as it gets without serious investment.
I have a K&N panel filter (only because I picked it up cheap) and cannot hear or feel any difference

The 57i looks like a real quick way to create a hot air intake and reduce the engine power

Exhausts. Lots have done it, so search a few posts as the noise produced seems to vary a lot and is to the liking of some and not others

Sound generator is a great mod to 'pipe' the right engine note to the cabin

There is a stainless backbox on eBay for £100 at the moment for a Z4... worth a punt?!

Cheers all - i'll look into the sound generator, never heard of this before. It looks like there is no benefit to the performance with an induction kitfrom what i'm hearing - so mayb i'll stay stock for now..

I saw that back box - will the 2.2 box fot my 2.5?

Sound generator adds noise, but it's only half the noise you will want.

I've got 25% of the foam left in the generator and it's about right, but I'd prefer 35% or so, and quieten it off a little, THEN add some real exhaust noise, as with the roof down it just never sounds great.

My plan, when I get round to it, is to pickup an old stock backbox, chop the top off the box, empty half the sound absorbing material, and close it up again.

Worse case it would need an adjuster of a few mm to match pipe diameters (if they are different) so any exhaust shop could fit it. Buying a box off Ebay is always a gamble - it could be 6 years old and/or covered 100k so you cannot be sure what you're getting.

There are some threads on induction kits but most seem to simply put a generic filter inside the engine bay and therefore draw in hot air and certainly lose power. The expensive GruppeM types IIRC develop the ram air concept a little more and may get marginal increases.

Can someone explain what the sound generator is please. I have heard that it might be a muffler in the exhaust? 3.0i is in the garage on friday so if I can get them to remove it all - i will! Thanks

Nothing to do with the exhaust. It's simply a pipe fitted as standard on the 3.0i that ducts sounds from the engine to the cabin. Filled with 2 pieces of foam to supress some noise, it ducts a more sporty sound in an otherwise silenced cabin.

Search 'sound generator' for pages of threads on them and retrofitting

I have the k&n 57i, a supersprint back box, and the y-connecting pipe. The sount is perfect. For the air filter you can use a heat shield

Hi guys,

I have an 06 2.5si. It seems like there is a some noise piped into the cabin imo. Did they have a sound generator as standard?

Thanks

There is no sound generator in your car unless it has been retro fitted, I thought about it a year or so ago, but not want I want as I would like more external noise if anything.
