K bus Instrument Cluster errors

Evening all,

My central locking stopped working on the key earlier today. I also couldn't operate -

- the passenger door (at all, stuck shut)
- interior lock release button dead
- fuel cap release

The only things that worked were the drivers door using the key in the lock. The boot release did work remotely.

I have read a lot about the GM5 module and figured this would be down to this - usual relays issue. The issue was that I was out and about and couldn't open the passenger door - not fun for my passenger. I pulled the CL fuses just to check and did a battery reset for 10 minutes but nothing doing.

Here's where the fun starts..

I noticed that the airbag light was on. I figured there wasn't much I could do so decided to drive home. I lost all instrument cluster 'tell tales' apart from the warning ones - i.e. no high beam lamp, indicator noise. I also lost wipers, roof, MFSW controls, CD changer, AC and lots of other things failed to work.

I got home and hooked up DIS. I ran a diagnostic and came up with the following faults under the instrument cluster module tab:

ECU: Kombi 85

Jobstatus: OKAY
Variant: Kombi85
---------------------------------------------
RESULT: 3 errors in memory !
---------------------------------------------

135 K bus

error frequency : 45

Short circuit to ground
error present
---------------------------------------------
198 light module-EEPROM error

Error frequency : 45

Open circuit
Error present
----------------------------------------------
32 Aibag

Error frequency : 40

Error present
K-Bus telegram70h failed (Mask 10)
---------------------------------------------

I tried to diagnose the airbag modules/satellites but DIS couldn't find/complete the test due to K bus errors. I'm assuming the K bus was simply down.

I have spent the last two hours reading forums and trying to get ideas but nothing stands out. Lots of open ended threads with no resolutions.

Any ideas warmly welcomed.

Thanks,

Behr.

Battery is 6 weeks old, sadly. I will check voltages and clean the terminals tomorrow to be sure, but it all looks minty mint.

Ok, so good news. It's fixed.

Now, I'd like to report that this was down to hours of stripping and removing components and some careful diagnosis and ninja coding skills. Sadly not.

So, this all came down to Fuse 45 being incorrectly placed in the adjacent spare holder for Fuse 44. Fuse 45 is for the 'Airbag' and if removed has the side effect of taking down the whole K-Bus throughout the car. Lesson - pay attention when pulling and replacing fuses at the roadside.

Now to put it all back together..

Hope this might help someone else one day!

Behr.

Nice of you to post the fix/outcome. As you said so many threads go unresolved on car forums which isn't much use to next member with the same issue. Very decent of you to admit it was your error, most wouldn't have!

Thanks

I'm never afraid to admit fault. I am pleased to contribute. If it wasn't for forum threads and enthusiaistic members I think we could all agree that we'd be out in the cold for most fixes.

This goes to prove that embarking on a lengthy diagnosis should only be done after simple and basic checks have been carried out. In my case it was a simple error that could have been far more troublesome than it already was. At least I learned how to use DIS and INPA in far more detail!
