Just my opinion obvs :-)

In over 40 years or owning cars I've never had a convertible, and didn't plan to start when I got my 1st Z4.

So for me it just had to be an E86 for the looks. It's probably the nearest I'll ever get to the E-Type FHC I always wanted since I was at primary school - and it probably drives much better anyway!

An MC was never going to be in budget, and as my car has to live outdoors I wouldn't to treat a car that rare like that.

But I think I'd only part with my Coupe for an MC - unless I reach the point when I can't get in or out.

Still, the OP has the best of both worlds - lucky guy.

Surely this comes down to numbers and simply supply and demand?

Same numbers of ///M roadster to coupe. Approx 600 each.

12 coupes on piston heads, but only 7 roadsters, so don’t think it’s that simple.

It’s purely down to the way it looks imo, that and the rarity of the coupe in comparison to a general Z4 roadster appearance.
To me the MC looks an entirely different car to the roadster, a Z4 wouldn't have been anywhere on my radar if BMW hadn’t built the MC.

Indeed and a Z4 wouldn't have been anywhere on my radar, if they only built the ///MC.

Horses for courses. :)

When people think of Z4 they think roadster.

When I got my first coupe quite a few friends never even knew they did a coupe version, Overall on Z4 Production according to Wikipedia.

197,950 Z4's were made with 180,856 being roadsters and just 17,094 coupes.

I think its the fact that the coupe is a "different" car and not so common as the Roadster.

For myself it was no contest, I saw a coupe and fell in love!

I do however enjoy borrowing my dads Si on a hot summers day.... But not enough to have one.

Stats can be made to prove anything:

- overall there were far more total nos of convertibles than Coupe’s
- as shown by Steve, in M guise their numbers are about the same

or just maybe it’s simply because the Coupe’s roof motor will never fail...

It will never succeed either!

Looks and rarity for me. I get that ///M numbers are comparable, but overall it’s still special to see a coupe on the road, whereas you’ll often spot several roadsters on a short drive.

It’s begging for a targa conversion - the roof is non-structural with four bolt holes and a simple mastic sealant between flat mating surfaces. You could even use the “double bubble” as a template for two removable panels that could fit in the boot.

Matter of taste,I prefer the coupe, cracking looking car,I sold my Phoenix si and was thinking of getting a z3 mcoupe which I nearly did and wished I did 15 years ago but a z 4 coupe went by when I was filling up in the garage and I thought I’ve got to get another one but it’s going to be an m and it’s got to be red then 5 weeks later I got wot I wanted,I’m not really into convertibles as I prefer a T- top like Datsun 280zx or Stag but not much to choose in that respect also a rag top will mess my hair up,it got to DARREN,I remember when he had more hair than me,now look at him

Similar hike in price from the 3.0si roadster to the 3.0si coupe. Never understood why. I've just put it down to the rarity of the coupe and the fact they are all facelift 3ltrs or Ms.

...yet there are always a lot more 3.0si coupes for sale than 3.0si roadsters. And I mean by at least 4 to 1, which must tell you something?

That might be because the coupe only entered production in 2006 wheres the roadster was 3 years earlier and the vast majority of sales were in the earlier years. Then of course the coupe was only available as the 3.0Si or the M which might not have been ideal for those seeking cheaper insurance etc.

Exactly this.

Yes same here. I think nowadays I'm more inclined to try a Z4MR as I know the performance and it is undoubtedly nice to have the roof down on sunny days, but I'd not buy one to 'cosset' or to keep for years. But back in 2011 when I was looking for a Z4MC the MR wasn't ever an option, not even close. The MC just looks amazing to my eyes, whilst the MR looks almost exactly like every other non-M roadster (which is a nicely designed car) but was never what I was after.
