Just for E85 / E86 _ Needs to be said !

An elderly lady with a walking stick came over to me while I was fiiling up, passing her Honda Civic and said to me that she always dreamed about owning a car just like mine and commented on how beautiful it was! The last person I would expect to say such a thing! If only I was 30 years older! The magnetic pulling power of the E85!

I've always been of the same mind but if you saw Metal lickers E89 in orange with a black roof you might change your mind - it also went well on the road. . . .

:driving:

Settle down Lads ..
Roadster vs Coupe is for another thread.
On this thread we are all toasting each other on our wise choice of Zeds.
And feeling sorry for the uninspired who have to drive those lardy E89's and pretend that a 4 banger performs like a real BMW Motor.

Cheers
Bumpy

(Coupe is the French version of an E85 isn't it ?
Looks French to me)

It seem you have a very short memory Bumpy.....or a very little brain!?

"I post my adventure on here not to use the Zed Forum as a bitching post...
But to assist others who are going down the same road by sharing what I've discovered. ..."

Now it's up to you if you want to drive an old car with tacky LED lights, awful wheels and needs your attention, time, and money.
But me, I'm happy with my 'lardy' 4 banger as it's shiney and new, has an aluminium roof which I can retract if I so wish, gets me to work in comfort, gets loads of attention, has BMW warranty should anything go wrong, and is quick enough to have a spirited drive when I choose.

Fascinated by the "lardy" accusation against the E89, do you all know what the E85/86 weighs ... LoL ... it's no Kylie Minogue.

Have to agree with you, but for me it just had to be an E86.
I know this may provoke some debate/abuse, but I just couldn't see the point of buying what should be a drivers' car that has had over 50% of its torsional stiffness removed just so you can get sunburn on your head if it isn't raining!
And the boot is much bigger.

I wouldn't argue that the coupe is a great looking car, but I'll question your "over 50%" less torsional rigidity figures :? where are your numbers? The E85 was designed from scratch as a fully braced and rigid convertible tub, hence the heavy firewall, rear wall and sills. It wasn't a chop-job of the coupe, that was an afterthought for photo-sensitive load carriers who didn't want an Astramax SRi van :poke:

Anyway just to keep it on topic, no the E89 isn't my thing and missed the mark styling wise both as a replacement for the roadster and coupe but I see the attraction of a rigid retractable roof if it's a daily driver.

It's not about the weight, it's the looks - which are mostly necessary because of the tin roof. Not as pretty as the e85 IMO, but they're all Zs 8)

Give it ten years and we shall all be buying E89s. I disliked the Z4 when it was first introduced if I remember correctly. Slowly warming to them...nice interiors lol

I would agree if it wasn't for that rear - its just so bland and ugly

Pretty sure mine is a sports car :P

The E89 is for adults. Very grown up, civilised, and with a cabin that is a very nice place to be. Like a well designed living room with nice furniture. And is at best when cruising along the boulevard at leisure posing away.

The E85/86 is for kids to play with. It has more basic tech, and is highly prone to being taken apart and modded.
And is best used to tear along country B roads as if the drivers backside is on fire!

And you know what? I think i want to be a kid again :D

Zed_Steve, hallelujah

Though to be fair there's a lot you can do to the e89, it's just really expensive to do so still.

I did toy with the idea of an E89 35si but the potential reliability issue put me off, I did test drive a 3 litre automatic version and decided it wasn't for me as it didn't feel like a sports car. Nice as a daily driver and interior is far superior. I got back in my E86 and thought why would I change as I had more fun driving my own car back from the dealer than I did with the test drive.Plus the E86 looks so sexy especially from the rear.

What reliability issue?

Do agree though I didn't find the driving experience in the E89 sporty enough, it's more of a cruiser/GT. I thought moving to a 35is would address this but for me it didn't which was a shame. I loved the looks, glorious sound, brutal straight line pace was simply mind blowing, reaching silly speeds in no time. But how often can you do that?
