Just dyno'd he old girl

Just back from BHP car festival and ran the 2004 2.5 M54 Z on it. So she's nearly 20 years of age and should have left the her birth factory @ 189bhp and 181nm of torque (I think that's right) she ran 210bhp and 248nm @ peak engine speed of 7236rpm.so the open intake and straight pipe and tune have gathered back all her power and more. Bearing in mind it was 29 degrees ambient air temperature I think that pretty decent for her. Sounded epic as well!!!!

It’s quite possible that the car is singing sweetly…however without any comparison data you could be just enjoying an optimistic dyno and/or it’s operator..

Enjoy the car come what may

7236rpm???!!

Have you had the redline increased? Stock/default M54 redline is 6500rpm I believe?

I am impressed with the numbers though!

Did 7 runs in totall, and just checked and actually was ambient air temp of 35 degrees!!!! Was between 208 and 210 each time so Im pretty sure it's a fair example. How would they manipulate the figures?not sure there a lot of point in doing that if your advertising your tuning company at a huge event. They had tyre size, all the usual maths torque x rpm divided by #cantremember. taking into consideration tyre size. Anyway it's defo an interesting test as hardly anyone I can find actually dynos the m54 unless been supercharged or turbod, with an ambient temp from the intake of 35 degrees if say that a decent gain Although I agree I don't have before figure, I'm pretty sure the intake, tune to higher rpm red line and straight pipe have given it a fair 20bhp and definitely hugely more responsive with the rebuilt aluminium Disa valve

Here's a couple of the runs

B21 is just pointing out that it could be on another dyno and run 185bhp. Or another dyno and run 215bhp.
If you had run it before you done the mods on the same dyno then again after the mods you would have seen what you actually have gained.
Other than that it’s just pub talk

The OP is happy with his car and it's figures.
I fully understand what you are all saying about needing comparisons on the same dyno, but the guy is chuffed with his car.
Don't be so hasty with the pouring of cold water.
Sometimes it's nice just to see someone happy and not immediately start calculating the deflection shot needed to bring them crashing down.

[ref]ZOID[/ref], did you have a good day? Are you happy with your car? That's all you need.

Beat me to it Enuff.....way to piss on a guy whose had a good day without any info the other way.

I've head Peter's dyno is well known for over-reading by about 250bhp :poke: :D

There is no pouring cold water or pissing.
It was merely an explanation that a car will run different bhp on different dynos.

Exactly, which everyone already knows, so he could be quoting less power than he is, meaning unless you do a hundred runs on diff dyno's no one will know for sure so why kick the guy for what is a fairly obvious few posts that he's overquoting his power figures. Unnecessary imo.

I’ve not said anything about over quoting power figure!?

Maybe not directly but seems pretty obvious that's why he's had the negative posts.

I’m a pretty straight talking man. If I want to say something I would have said it.
My point was was it’s not about the headline figure. It was what the mods added!?
If he would have done a dyno before and after he could have seen what gains he would have. Which is the real measure.
He could have posted my car made 180bhp and my response would have been exactly the same.

1. We all know every dyno is different.
2. We all know that the only way to gauge performance increases is to do before and after runs on the same dyno and look at the percentage gained, not the big headline figure.

However, it is easy to see that the OP is a very enthusiastic new owner, buzzing that his car is performing so well.
Rightly or wrongly (accepting that typed words cannot convey the nuances that speech can) I felt that if I were the OP I would be a little disheartened that the replies to his happy post seemed to be telling him to calm down and not believe it.

Can we not just ignore the science for a little while and be happy for him too.

Glass half full… Scientifically, one cannot exclude the possibility that the calibration of the dyno even underestimates the power - and OP’s zed could have even MORE! Love your zed :trampoline:

Yeah possibly and that would be great

How can he do a before and after on that Dyno he ran on today...? He can't so as you so eloquently put it it's 'Pub talk'....so why have a pop at him at all....? As I said, unnecessary and points to pissing on him because he has good power figures which seems to have flicked a couple of people's switches.
