I've just seen some of the front pages of today's papers and the Mail on Sunday has a supposed report quoting some senior figure/Boss at the BBC saying that Clarkson is like Savile.
The Saville analogy is not comparing what Clarkson has done against the evil behaviour of Saville at all. Jezza is a saint by comparison. It's the bullying way in which he tries to get his way. The BBC has learnt to its cost that no one person can be bigger and more important the the organisation, or even a small part of it.
It seems that he realised that having done something stupid that he thought he could limit the damage by fessing up himself. In doing so he he thought he could get away with a slap on the wrist. It's dawning on him that in light of Saville that the Beeb are simply not going to turn away and ignore what he's done. Nor should they. If you did this single act out in the real world it is summary dismissal, or, as he's contracted by a third party, termination of contract. If he did get away with it, it's giving the message that it's ok to thump somebody, and, in return, it's ok to expect to be thumped yourself without any consequences.
The fact that the BBC is giving him the opportunity to present at a tribunal is credit to them. Let's see how contrite he is then as he has already effectively admitted what happened.
The Beeb don't really care about JC - he is a high profile presenter, yes, but, they will be worried about the potential loss of huge global earnings. JC is just one of a massive and extremely talented production team (think about what you see - not just three guys but some fantastic filming and ideas). Tens if not hundreds of people are now out of work because of one self-important opinionated oaf. I bet JC isn't paying their wages out of his cash mountain.
TG could go to another channel, but they won't get anything like a the current budget. They would also have to recreate the same channels to the wider market. That would take years. Commercially you couldn't just lift and shift it and it be the same. How many programmes have moved and retained their attraction - not many. It's not because of the programme, it's the logistics, financing and IPR.
I'm not a fan of Clarkson nor do I dislike him. I do dislike that he uses his position to diss others who have no opportunity to respond. He should have checked how long the piece of rope was - it was shorter than he thought.
I feel sorry for the millions who watch enjoy TG, frequently despite Jezza not because of him. We are all missing a great tv programme.
TG was due for a change. It will change, but I think it will stay at the BBC with a new or changed line-up and formula. This episode was the trigger. Jezza foolishly loaded the ammunition and pulled the trigger himself doing the job for the BBC so they didn't have to.
