Its too quiet!

I've just ordered the Gruppe-M intake for my car and after watching that Utube clip I think it was money well spent :-) Just gotta wait for it to arrive now...

Just took the sponge out today. :driving:

There was only one piece that i could see, but taking it out has changed it to almost exactly the sound i want! Its a kind of resonating sound, is this because air is bouncing around in the bulkhead?

Great though, nothing much whilst ambling but more noise when accelerating. Spot on
Thanks again Corf :)

This is something i will try on Sat did you think the car still sounds like a prestige car as i do not want a cheap racket in the cabin making things vibrate.

Your welcome Dreamer :)

GAZA62 - I think the beauty of the fact that you can cut the foam down to size means that you can have it as loud or as subtle as you want - I loved it to start with no foam in at all, but found when cruising and just wanting to speed up a little in 6th (i.e on the motorway) that it wasn't exactly what i was after - so i cut the foam in half, put it back in and am really happy with it - still sounds much better on hard acceleration, but not quite as "raw" as when there was nothing - each to their own really!

I'd say just have a play round with it til it sounds how you want it to - if you don't like any combination of foam sizes, just whack it all back in - easy job!

Let us know how you get on :)

The sound generator is a device fitted to the 3.0 Z4
So this little trick isn't available for the 2.5? :(

I believe that the sound generator was only available on the 3.0 after the 04/04 build.

Here is one of my first video's with one of the pieces of foam removed. When the video gets to 2:16 and later you can hear the cabin sound.

You should join in on some of our drives. :poke: :driving:

Well i removed the foam yesterday only one piece came out

Z4135.jpg

Went for a spin this morning not sure if its a little loud on the motorway when i kick down not the growl i was expecting more of a howl but around town its nice when you push the pedal a bit more get a nice bark (problem with this is will tend to drive to quick around town) but most of the time it sounds as before going to experiment with different size foams but may pop it back in for long journeys as its such a quick job to put in and take out

Gaz do you just have framed pictures of different cars around your house?! :D :D

Thats the same size piece of foam that came out of mine. It was difficult to see if there was anymore, but even if there was how would you get your fingers in to tell??

IMO having the noise is essential just for the novelty, as for me driving fast does'nt happen to often so I may aswell ammuse myself making the odd bark with short bursts of acceleration!

the sponge in the photo is the thinner one of the two. if you follow the pipe a jubilee is at the other end were it joins the sound generator, release the jubilee and there is a denser sponge in there, that made a bigger difference on my engine.

Must have been really loud that piece i took out was a very tight fit have cut it in half and poped back in will go for a run in the morning see how i like it.

i did have the later n52 engine though so maybe it has a different affect. I owned a calibra a few years back, loved it. 16v manual though. still have the oil stains on the garage floor..

Used to here a few horror stories about the 16v cars the 8v was not quick but what a great little engine would cruise all day between 90-100 no probs had some great trips down to Le-Mans each year.

i had the ;ast of the pre echotechs which were the most powerfull ones they had plus more reliable. luckily mine was rebuilt before i got it but it loved a good oil leak, fix one and another started... so i left it and lived with them lol

I've just removed the foam from mine and it sounds awful. Sounds the same up until 4K and then :( I removed both bits of the foam...

I am convinced the car is more responsive...

Was quite a bit... £500 ish all in :?
