Its time i shared my 2016 BHP plans

The other thing to consider here is that in stage 2 he replaced all the bushes etc, most of which will be wasted on a complete new drivetrain and will need to be replaced again.

Find a writtten off z4m for christsake.

Take all the goodies from it and scrap it.

Don't spend so much money to get a poxy 231bhp 3.0.

Z4m engine Has lots of bhp and is a much nicer engine than the old 3.0 in the pre 2006s

Im pretty sure you could even use a written off e46 m3...they do share alot of parts

all been said but buying a new car and then peeling parts out is insanity unless it comes at a good price.. BUT I can sympathise with wanting to keep the original car tbh, I've been there. You're best off either buying a motor/running gear and loom etc (and if you go that route, maybe not stop at a 3.0) or getting something which has been dinged and parting it and your 2.0 out.. It can pan out well, bought my supra with a bit of duff bodywork, by the time I sold seats, brakes, gearboxes etc, it has only cost $200 and I still have a full car left over

I'd not suggest buying an ///M anymore, i'd just say simply buy a better car, Z4 isn't that good, and its definitely not worth that money or time - i think you need to drive something better to realise how much of a special/better car you can get with what you're about to spend. Either way, i respect you wish to keep it regardless of cost etc (though i think if you took an AMV8 out you'd maybe change your mind).

As such - the best suggestion for your stage 3 i can make, is don't buy another Z4, boring Z4 engine and make your car less special - anyone can take their Z4 and supercharge it, and they'd all be burning cash - MAYBE it's worth it if you've got an ///M? but even then it's a z4-specific passion thing rather than best VFM. Taking a 2.0 to a FI 3.0 or whatever is like going to mcdonalds and changing your order from hamburger to a quarter-pounder with cheese, when there are things like the big tasty already made and in use...

Instead, go V10, V8, Bigger anything than what is stock rolling out of the factory... Hell, how about this (Yes, it's an FF ~650bhp V12):

In all seriousness, just do whatever you want lol.

Impressed by your positive approach and dedication to your pride and joy Jonny, however I'd seriously take note of the masses all saying pretty much the same thing.

Regardless of cost and whether you can afford it or not, don't go the doner/donner/Donna/dinner car route unless is smashed up. Aside from everything else you'll be wasting a perfectly good 3.0 and I doubt anybody will touch the 'new' 2.0.

...I guess that may have an incremental effect on values though with one less original 3.0 on the road

What I'm basically saying is, if enough people are saying its an odd idea then it's probably an odd idea. Look for a ditched e46 M3 and get busy with the toolkit

Would the new model engine fit? :-)

or this, an M engine:

You could always just take the car to www.dynotorque.co.uk and have them fit an LS1 V8

They did an E46 recently, so the Z4 should be easy for them:

What a crazy impractical thread to consider trying to transplant an entire bog standard 3.0 engine and invariably half the drivetrain and electronics into a 2.0

Beggars belief, of the time and effort vs benefits, but makes for amusing reading....

That was a guy called Blair who had the LS1 fitted into his E46, cost him the best part of £15k and that was mates rates. Having said that i have been out in that car, and it was frighteningly quick. Soooooo much torque from low down in the rev range. He was getting through tyres every 6 months.

I think he has now sold it and only got around £12k for it, maybe even less.

project cars are often worth less than the sum of their parts :(

Such a cool car, total sleeper :)

My mate Ken has a Procharged LS2 in his 200SX, that thing is insane!

The 2.0 is plenty quick enough for you JE.

All you do it look at it on your drive. :poke:

Useful link not the usual negative comments, cheers fella
I dont think any of the comments are negative, they are realistic and sensible.
The way I see it there are a lot of people on here that dont want you to waste your money or your car and are commenting for your benefit.
Would you rather everybody just said "great idea, brilliant, you can do it" without giving you advice on the problems you may come across.
Its not the sensible thing to do, throwing money at something instead of upgrading to something better.
I posted this pic earlier, it is of my previous bike and the one that replace it.
I always said I would never get rid of my Exup (white one) but I was being stupid thinking it could cut it with the modern stuff and keep going forever.
Once I had a test ride on the R1 (black one) I knew I had to move on and let the other one go even though I loved it and wanted to keep it.
This is what you should do.
