Its great that you want to do this and try to keep the car that you obviously love but some of your plans sound ridiculous.
Buying a 3.0 to put that engine into your 2.0 then putting your 2.0 engine into the 3.0 is really crazy, its just spending money and wasting time and all you will accomplish is a faster 2.0, a slower 3.0, and neither worth anything.
I have read quite a few of the similar threads about upgrading your engine and I have to agree with the vast majority on here that are advising you to just sell up and buy a Z with a bigger engine and mod that.
You could keep all the bits you like and swap them over and even keep your reg plate.
To 99% of people looking at your car it would be the same car.

:scratchhead: I just don't get it. Who is going to buy the donor car when it is registered as a 3.0 but has a 2.0 in it. At the moment, you could probably sell your car for good money as it looks a great example, but once you swap engines over that massively restricts the resale surely

Its madness all your mods are cosmetic... Get a silver M and swap EVERYTHING OVER.
But if you want to go through this hassle to have a less relaiable car than just DO IT ALREADY!
I admire that you want to keep your car and upgrade it, but I don't understand why you want to make it ordinary, there's 1,000's of 3.0 litre zeds. make it unique.....

Jonny, your Z is immaculate and a credit to you. I personally applaud your madness and with an m54 and supercharger it will be an absolute stonker of a car. From what I am picking up you have a personal attachment to this car and plan to always have it, why not make it what YOU want (you probably already have).
I do understand the comments about buying a whole DONER car though, just get the bits you need! Spend the saving on having all the bits you need rebuilt to a better spec!

depends what your doing and to what level. JE if i screwed my 3.0i then just another engine is easy but JE is going from a 2.0 to a 3 the whole lot is going to be different from the sounds of it.
donnor cars are often an easy way of getting all the bits in one go that you know works. check out the westfield sports cars site and look at their mazda mx5 donnor build spec.
essentially you take a mk1 mx5 remove everything and then fit it to a seven chassis. JE is in a half way house position. he is chosing to take drive train to his chassis. maybe a better way is to take his trinketry (interior wheels brakes etc) and ship them over to the 3.0 chassis. but hey its his life. he needs to do a lot of checking to make sure the bits match up. but he has been talking about this for ages so he probably has. his comment about the fly wheel is sort of in the right direction but i would say just 1 small part in a larger jigsaw.
