Issues with the M - Help?

Not an easy one to diagnose..

But fault codes are only the start of the diag trail.... Live data needs to be seen to see what is going on when the fault occurs..

What is weird is the DSC/EML light light on at the same time.....

If you would want my guess i would say MAF sensor...

could be the MAF... very well could be....... i have a genuine one with 4k miles use if you interested OP... they are 150 quid plus from the dealers new...

id be looking towards the MAF here however, the jerky behaviour leans me that way.. do you have an aftermarket intake setup???

Car is completely standard. I will take that MAF sensor. Il send you a Pm.

After a good read up it would appear to be most likely throttle body related. Either TPS, dodgy TB actuator or a problem with the levers. My Indy did say the levers and actuator were very stiff but he cleaned and freed them up. I also occasionally get a lumpy idle, something I never noticed before but after sitting I. The car for a bit tonight it's apparent it's not as smooth as I though. I will replace the MAF on the first instance, and if no improvement then hand it ack to the Indy and see if he can figure it out.

On a side note, has anybody on here used Customer Protect Warranty Gold. This is the company who my Warranty is with. Google suggests the are utterly useless and never pay out, without any stored fault codes, I can see them not being of any use at all. I don't know whether I can be bothered with the agro and stress of tryin to claim through them so may just have to take the hit myself.

I cant see why any of the these would cause the car to come to a halt though ?

Not had a chance to do anything yet Byron. I was going to clean up my MAF sensor but having had a read up about it on M3cutters it doesn't appear to be advisable. Evolve strongly recommend against it.

The car has gone into limp mode the past few times, but previously it wouldn't do anything. Idled and revved erratically. It also once threw up the emissions light. I have reset my throttle, can't see it helping but you never know.

Or take it somewhere else where they can repair it. Are there any other garages you can call and describe the problem to see if they have come across it before. Serious question - how long after the infamous track session where your mate drove it like he was qualifying for the BTCC final did it start throwing up these problems? Also I wouldn't be driving it with it keep shutting down and going into limp home, who knows what damage that is doing.

yeah cleaning the MAF isnt really recommended.... once their done they are done.... id start by changing some of the obvious parts then take it to a specialist to be honest.... but DIY as much as you can as these cars can make big bills quickly!!

The Indy I use is very, very good. He was head BMW mechanic for years and Alpina and M trained. There isn't anywhere else this side of the border that I would take it. After the amount of threads I have read on M3cutters I am almost positive it's a TPS or the throttle actuator. My Indy didn't have much info to go on last time, so he will be much better informed this time round so hopefully they will get it sorted.

The car has done approx. 3000 miles since that trackday and hasn't missed a beat up until a few weeks ago. The car also only throws a wobbler intermittently which doesn't help trying to diagnose the issue or replicate the problem for my Indy.

TPS position can be easily tracked on diagnostic live data..

Its easy to see if its faulty, worn or needs adjusting.

Went out for a run to Ullapool yesterday. Car ran fine all the way there but started to play up on the way home. The throttle became very jerky again and felt almost like a misfire. I revved it to clear it and got an almighty backfire from the exhaust. It then drove fine for a while before being jerky again. A quick rev of the car would clear it. Eventually the car would throw up the aforementioned warning lights, although this time it was doing it at anytime, not just when coming off the throttle. Could this potentially be MAF related or does it still sound like a throttle issue? When I turn the key to Ignition II the EML light and DSC light stay illuminated but disappear once I start the car. Is that normal? I can't remember.

I think I will buy the diagnostic cable from BM Technic. Will I be able to pull the codes with the engine running?

The light sequence is normal..

Being honest the car needs to go in somewhere that can sort it out, live diagnostics will be able to show whats going on with the car and should be able to get close to the problem,if not pinpoint it..

Its not easy to interperit the problem when i cant hear, feel or drive the car....But going off what you say it sounds more MAF/lambda issue to me..

The thing that upsets the apple cart is why is the DSC light illuminating as well as the EML..... It has to be a part/sensor that is intrinsically linked, unfortunatly that still can be quite a few things.MAF/throttle housing/ABS module to name a few..

I wouldnt buy the cable, whats the point if you cannot in interperit the information that is fed back to you..? Invest the money in a good diag man and he may just find your problem in a timely fashion..

Got the day off from work tomorrow so brought the car home and got it booked into my Indy for Thursday. Sods law though, the car drove faultlessly for the whole 130miles. I tried to provoke it into throwing up the warning lights by dabbing the throttle but no joy at all. I have one of those generic OBDII scanners, which is saying there is a fault code but showing up with N/A. Hopefully the Indy's diagnostics will pick something up.

Your maf should arrive tomorow morning, I think it may be the answer to your problem ....

I think the next step is to get the TPS's replaced. Any thoughts?
