Issue with roof not comimg up

Hello
The roof of my e85 2008 was working without any difficulty or strange sounds until yesterday. Suddenly, yesterday, it unlocked and went down without any issues. However, when I pushed the button to make it come up, the pump seemed to be working, but the roof did not come up. If I force it a little by hand, it comes up and locks correctly.
Any idea where to look as troubleshooting?

Is the motor/pump in its original place or has it been moved to the boot?
Sounds like the pump side of it has failed or you have lost fluid from a leak.
If it’s still in original position I would advise you contact Number5 on this forum who is expert on roofs, based in BRISTOL he can relocate it to the boot and carries spares if anything is needed. Very reasonable charge to do this and you won’t get messed about.

Thanks for the quick response, Colb. It is in its original place. I will try to relocate it. Basically, I can't contact Number5. I'm based in Greece, so I don't think he can help. :(

I agree with everything [ref]colb[/ref] says. All I would add is, whilst it is unusual for a roof pump to suddenly fail rather than showing signs of slowing down previously, if a pipe had failed it would be unlikely to go up once assisted. Also, with no fluid you would not have to force it as there would be no hydraulic lock.
Is there any chance you may have pulled the red ring in the boot and not reset it properly? Your symptoms are very similar to one I had last week. Though reset, the bypass plunger had not fully returned and a percentage of the hydraulic fluid was bypassing, not acting on the hinges. Gravity disguised the issue on the way down, but there wasn't enough pressure to raise it again.

Ah well, flights out there aren't too expensive. 8)
But I'm sure Alan would still be happy to help talk you through it.

I think you're going to need the motor moved into the boot before you can ascertain much more.
All I will say is that being in Greece it is probably a lot less likely that a build up of rainwater has corroded the pipes. :D

enuff-zed is right best get it moved to the boot so you can see what you are doing, good video how to on YouTube to get you started.

And keep in touch on here.
[ref]Number5[/ref], [ref]bigwinn[/ref], and I all do these roof motors and all carry spares if you need them.
I'm sure any one of us would be happy to help if we can.

Looks like I can get a return flight to Greece for about £150.

Update *** i saw that the red ring has been pulled, i pushed it in again lock it and tadaaaaa works but again with some difficulty….. opened it again and tried to close it again… :( :( again motor seems to work but it need some help to come up :headbang: :headbang:

OK, so that sounds as though pulling the red ring has pushed the bypass plunger in and it hasn't fully come back out, so some fluid is sneaking past it.
Bad news is you'll need to pull the motor into the boot.
Good news is, if you're lucky, just freeing off the bypass plunger 'may' fix it.

A spare motor and pump will easily fit in a carry on bag................... just saying...................

I will start with the relocation steps, next week and ill come back! But yes a spare motor and pump sounds good. With the Freeing off the by pass plunger you mean to push it back again correct ? (which not work)

When you get the motor out you will see the manual release cable connects to the pump with a black plastic mounting. Remove that and underneath you'll find a small brass plunger, 5mm socket size. This should stick out 3mm or so. If it is stuck in, spray some lubricant on it and use a socket to twist it until it pushes in and pops back put freely.
Then make sure that when the cable is reconnected it is not under any tension and pushing on the plunger.
On the left side of the roof the cable has a white adjuster. Wind that in until the lever on the pump is fully extended.

Motor relocated successfully…. After 2 hours and some new words of slung I learned talking to my self …. Finally relocated… next step to check the brass plunger and the fluids
