i do love my car though i just dont have the time to drive it much, so i'm stuck with what to do, its a fun weekend car and with two kids that want to get into a Mortal Kombat conquest over who gets to come with me i just dont get to drive it as much as i want think this year i've done just over a 1000 miles. :headbang:

so what have others done here, do you all find time to just drive it more? or have you decided to move on maybe bought something better, interested to hear your thoughts before i go to the marketplace and list it

Unless you're in the fortunate position of just keeping those that you really really loved..forever..few people are in that position..

I've 4 kids, 17, 15, 13, 10... So, my Z4 isn't my primary driver, but a seasonal car I'll drive to work or when I'm just taking one of them out.

I can tell you that even one of the bigger BMWs with 4 seats/2 doors isn't going to be comfortable for any of my kids (they are all tall) to sit in the back, and my wife would never let me put a car seat in my 330 CIC E46's when they were younger. So, it's always a fun car, but not necessarily a family car. If you have a carport/garage/barn, it's easy to keep a car running with maintenance even if you don't drive it much. These aren't investments in anything but joy.

My Toyota SUV sits outside in the weather while my Z4 is in the garage, but that's fine. It's got 10 years on it and only 70k miles, so it will last at least for another 15 unless the cultists ban petrol. My sons are already planning my demise to inherit either one. :rofl:

i agree there, these are just cars that bring joy, some part of me would love to keep it but is that just me not wanting to let go even though all signs point to get something better suited for my situation now.

It sounds like it doesn't fit the bill too well with 2 kids, so that's probably why you haven't used it much. As much as you may still like it you aren't getting to enjoy it really.

A 335i sounds like a great idea - you can always return to a Z4 once the kids have grown up!

I would look at an F33 440i convertible as a replacement TBH. The B58 engine is MUCH better (and more reliable), or even an F83 M4 vert.

F83 M4 convertible is certainly the way to go but I am biased, they are a great car, tonnes of power, more than you need and can do 40 if you plod along on the motorway.

Get a good indie for servicing and it can be pretty reasonable, insurance is not that bad for an ole fart like me but True-blue struggled when he was looking.

Anyway the 440i is also a cracking car

Guess it's down to how much you selfishly like the car. I've got 2 kids but to be fair my little girl is only 3mo the old. My boy is nearly 4 and absolutely adores 'daddy's race car'. He's been on at me for weeks about when I'll be picking him up from nursery in it (it's away in the garage now until spring).

So yeah as some have already said I guess it mostly depends on if you've got the space to keep it squirelled away and how much you want to keep it. For me nothing short of a 997.2 gt3 +/-RS would come close to replacing the buzz my zed gives me, and I've got the space to tuck it away when I'm not using it, and a disco 4 and 3 series touring for family duties, so it's a no brainier (if a little unimaginative to some) to keep mine - I absolutely adore it still after 5 years. If any of those things weren't in place then it might be a different story however!

I think you should try to keep it if you still enjoy it. Have you considered getting something fun for your wife to drive? That way you could go on road trips as a family in two cars. There used to be a couple who were forum members who had two Z4 coupes and it worked well for them.

I think asking for and listening to opinions in order to make sure that when we make our personal decisions we have considered different perspectives is a very sensible thing.

Me and the other half have one son. In an ideal world we would have four cars... the missus' Fiesta for day to day use, mainly by her, a cheap workhorse for dump runs etc (my Lancer estate is perfect for that), a nice estate for family trips and long journeys, and a fun car (the E86).

Being sensible three is plenty and I need to accept that either I ditch the fun car, or use a crappy workhorse for long journeys, or upgrade the crappy workhorse to a nice estate. For me I think the decision is "upgrade the estate", not "ditch the fun car".... but a big part of that decision comes down to how perfect the E86 is as a fun car for me, and perfect when it's just me and my son (which it often is). But if I had two kids then I can see the E86 getting a LOT less use.

Interestingly, part of my reason for getting the E86 was as something to bond with my son over, even though he's not a big car fan... and it's worked. And, to my great surprise, he went almost immediately from telling me off if I accelerated fast in my Lancer or went 1mph over the speed limit... but in the Zed I can floor it to overtake someone and he doesn't moan at all!

If I were OP I'd be considering a 330 convertible or Coupe or even a similar era 6 series. How much space is there in the back of a 90s 8 series?
