BMW will be converting the Z4 into a coupe-convertible with a folding metal hardtop when it introduces the next-gen model in early 2009. Recent spy shots of a prototype testing new Munich showed a car with a familiar shape to the current Z4. Short rear overhangs and a long hood characterized the test-mule but it also featured a new folding roof and was slightly larger than the current model. This is in-line with BMW’s plans to reposition the next Z4 into a higher price point as it makes way for the introduction of a smaller entry-level Z car.

As reported yesterday, production of the new Z4 will be handled by BMW’s Regensburg plant in Germany. The move will enable BMW to produce volume sellers, such as its SUV models, in the US and take advantage of the favourable exchange rate. At the same time, low volume premium models like the new Z4 will be manufactured at plants in Germany.

A couple of years after the Z4 is launched in ‘09, BMW will add the potent M version of the car. This new model is in-line to receive the new high-rev 4.0L V8 engine that debuts in the new M3. Other engines for the new Z4 range will include the 300hp twin-turbo six, as well as the smaller 2.5L naturally aspirated petrol six.

This artist’s rendition of the car gives us a good indication as to what the final styling may look. BMW is expected to introduce styling derived from the CS concept across much of the range and this should also be visible on the Z4.

It will be interesting to look back a couple of years from now and see how accurate all this info floating around out there is... :P

I'm sure I read this previously, but is that definitely the next Z4 - didn't someone suggest it was the current model with the 335 engine?

I know the nose looks a bit different, but if you look at some of the other spy pics, that car has the exact same lines below the disguise - same bootlid, mirrors, door handles, and things like the aerial and fuel fill cap are in exactly the same place. The rear lights are also in the same place / look exactly the same.

I reckon it's a 335 mule, and will be announced very soon. Or maybe that's complete rubbish, who knows

"Who knows" is about what we know for sure... :P

I loved going back on Z4um and looking through the "there's going to be an ///M?" threads - some of it was so obvious with the benefit of hindsight, especially the last mules a few months before the ///M was confirmed.

IMHO, that looks like the new Z8, not the new Z4.

Depending on the rumor d'jour, there will be no more Z4, just a Z8 and a Z2. IF this is true, then I suspect that this is the upscale Z8.

The move upscale concerns me a bit ... the Z4 hit me just right as a good balance between luxury, performance, practicality, and price. Its WAY WAY too soon to know for sure, but I may find myself looking elsewhere to find something between an overpriced Z8 an entry level Z2.

One reason why BMW NA is bringing the 1 series (limited) to the US.

My feelings exactly....

Here's another couple looking longer and wider.
I'm not convinced. It looks longer because it has small wheels; it's hard to judge scale.

And look at the length of the C-pillar. There's no way that's a folding hard top -- the C-pillar is too long to fit into the length of the boot.

God I can't hold the silence anymore!!!

Yes thats the new one,
I have physically seen it, and sat in it, and played with it (to an extent)
They had a prototype up here in NJ that I was invited to go and review at the meadowlands,

They made me sign a form saying I wont disclose any info,
But I just can't keep it in any more lol,
They had a few other cars there too to discuss and give opinions on, The Mazda Miata, Porsche Boxter, Nissan 350z Current Z4, New Z4, and the Mercedes SLK, all were silver in color,

We got to sit in and play with all 6, and give our opinions on what we liked about each model,
It was a test organized by BMW and all the interview was taped and recorded, They paid me $250 too :)
I wasn't allowed any camera or cell phone into the exhibition hall, they even questioned my Omega Watch lol, I said to them "yes" it is technically a James Bond watch but not "that" kind of Bond watch ;)

Im telling you now guys, the new Z4 is stunning, I really hope the production model was the same as the one I seen, The hood is cut like that and if you could only see the nose itself and the new headlights it is absolutely stunning,

Apparently they did these expos all over the US to current Z4 owners and owners of other roadsters to gain info on this new Z4,

Thats about all I can say :D
