Is this normal? Steering noise

Hi all,

I've not long had my Z4 but I've noticed like a groaning noise from the steering at low speeds. Weird noise, like a ghostly groan (no it's not a joke as it's halloween today!)

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Common sound on the power steering take it you only hear it during low speed manoeuvres ?

Mine did this too, kind of stopped when the weather started cooling... Then seemed to come back. I was never sure if it was the steering rack or the firewall braces... Finally got round to checking the nuts on the braces, and whilst it wasn't loose one of the ones in the centre actually at the firewall accepted some tightening... And all groaning has now ceased. Worth checking, but if there are no loose nuts it is nothing to worry about

Hi, can you let me know where these nuts are exactly? Are we talking in the engine bay or underneath? Going to have a look later and will report back.

Only ///M Zeds have power steering fluid. Others are electric powered.

Then this...?
your noise is coming from the rubber boot that passes through the fire wall on the steering shaft. go under the dash on the drivers side and remove the panel under the dash you will see the steering shaft go through the fire wall. BMW recommends universal lubricant and to pull the boot up and lubricate the slip joint on the boot. there is a bulletin for it. if that doesnt fix it the boot is to blame itself.

Is this the noise you guys are talking about?

If so mine also does it every now and then when it is warmer outside (much more so on left hand turns). It has completely stopped recently due to the cooler temperatures, but I would like to get to the bottom of it as it is annoying when it does happen...

Bing would you letting us know in a bit more details where the bolts are that you were refering to?

Blimey that sounds horrendous, like a whale or something; not good for kerb appeal :( Hope you get it sorted soon mate for small £

The bolts on the ends of the black tubular struts that are attached to the top of each suspension tower and meet in a V at the back of the engine bay. Don't touch the 3 nuts actually holding the suspension though :!:

Sorry, been out all day...

That's the exact noise I have.

Cheers Bing, will double check this. Was yours making the same noise shown in the link I posted?

Hmmm. Nope, not like that recently. More of a creak behind the dash when turning / changing levels, for example reversing out of a slightly sloped drive, or round a tight corner, all at low speed. In the summer I had some noise actually from the column too, but nothing like that loud !

Yep that's it!!

A bit of a revival, but did those suffering with this noise got to the bottom of it? Mine has started playing up again in the warmer weather and it's getting on my tits!

There was an attachment in the sticky steering thread somewhere, or might have been bimmerforum..... the EPS in the non M Z4s will make a slight whine whilst stationary, and when turned quickly
