Is the coupe worth more than the roadster?

Ah true...

No guarantee that an M car is gonna appreciate though..
Indeed.

But i'm fairly confident it will hold a lot more value than any E89 after a couple of years ;).

Horses for courses - I don't buy cars to make money

I generally lose shed loads - but at least i'm enjoying it

I agree ...

The older shape has probably done most of its dropping in value due to its age..

They M cars are on the crest of a wave at the moment IMHO... Due to the big players buying low miles stock and pushing up the prices...
How long this will last is hard to say..they will only be " good news" for so long until the next car to jump on comes along..

You could catch a cold quite easily at the moment, especially if paying into the high teens for a car..but that's a risk you take if buying with depreciation / appreciation in mind..

It's not an easy one to read... I did very well out of my M coupe and M roady... I was lucky to buy in at the right time and they both made me a bundle of cash... I'm sure I bought at the trough of the market though

I work on the assumption that any car I buy with be worth scrap value in 10 years time when I replace it. Been spot on so far.

I think assuming a car is scrap is a bit extreme, for one it depends on how many miles you do and how you treat your cars.
Pretty sure some of these cars are 10 years old now, and worth 6-10k.
Worth their scrap weight in gold maybe?

Z4M-2006 - I agree that the prices are a bit hefty right now. But then so is the value of my coupe, so I will only be putting a couple of grand in to change. So it should even out.

With the ZM's I think we are seeing them benefit from a general trend that's seen the great NA engined sports cars start to rise in value as the turbo era comes in for good. Cars like the 996 GT3/GT3 RS have been the biggest beneficiary as have other exotics like the 360 Challenge Stradale too. But it has filtered down to more modest cars like ours because of the brand equity of BMW M. Who knows if current values are a crest of a wave? Personally I doubt that as the original M Coupe has been steadily climbing in value for a long time now. As have others like the M3CSL, the original M3/5 and cars like the M635CSi. But I don't think we'll be retiring on the proceeds. Steady, modest growth is probably as good as it will get. To be honest it's just nice to be sitting on a car with one of the major costs (depreciation) not a factor.

If you want an investment and are worried about residuals or what will happen to your money ....
Then better to stick your money on an ISA Tracker/ETF and the remaining 2k into a high miles Mk1 Eunos wth a hard top in the winter and winter tyres
If you aren't bothered about residuals that much and you want a car for all year round then buying into a cheap higher miles E89 to get best of both worlds would seem to be the cogent way forward .
If it's just a summer car you want then hard to beat an M roadster IMHO -i just don't get the concept of buying another tin top M coupe as a 2nd fun car for the summer -although it makes perfect sense as a daily runner
Cant go wrong either way IMHO

BMW M cars will always have a good following and your money is fairly secure....

Remember though that it's only super rare stuff that's achieving big money..

e36 M3's , E46 M3's , last 3 gens of M5's, M6 are all cheap.. all NA too..

Whereas the twin turbo 1M has superb residuals...

It's difficult to predict.... I wish I knew because I would be a rich man... Lol

TBH whether its is an E85/86 or E89 -we are really splitting hair here as they are all really lovely Z4's - so you buy what takes your fancy and fits your budget and you'll be well sorted

More like if we all has a $ for everytime these type of threads are started we would all be rich

If you think you are going to make big money on a production line car such as the Z you are away with the fairies. So pull off the dust sheets, unplug the trickle charger and enjoy driving the thing, whatever the shape :)

i agree with this howver you'll loose much less on a well looked after car, it could even make a slight amount of money it time, its all down to luck

In response to the original question: Yes. The coupe is better.

That does not answer the original question. :poke:

Plus it's incorrect. :D

An equivilent Coupe is however worth more that a roadie. :o

That said..........

There was a cheap M coupe snapped up very quickly.... Bargains are still out there...

There can't be a definitive answer but ive just done a small test through WBAC & i can state that as of tonight a 2007 MR is worth more than a 2007 MC if both have identical spec & miles :P
So OP the answer to your post in my case is a sound NO

WBAC offered £8000 for my M coupe........

Just over half of what it sold for..........lol.........

Pretty accurate valuations...

But then Hexagon would try to sell it for £4k more than you sold it for. Madness
