Is it worth maintaining the warranty? (Roof failure fear)

Hi,

I have a 2003 AUC Z4. its done 55k on the clock...

I was thinking, is it worthwhile keeping the warranty? The reason i ask is because i am super p!ssed at BMW UK for not sorting out the corrosion on my bonnet. They refused on rust - warranty grounds. :headbang:

A disgrace that for a 5/6 year old car it is acceptable to have rust problems.

SO...I want to to go elsewhere. Or in otherwords, take my hard earned cash elsewhere. The only thing stopping me is possible roof failure...

Please advise.

ps: If the roof does fail, i wont be doing it DIY..

Relax.

Chances are the roof wont fail.

If in the low chance the roof does fail, then buy a warranty, wait a couple of months, then claim for failure of the electrical component.

Ummmm. Bad advise about buying warranty after the failure. Ummmmm! Most of us buy it up front!

Do you currently have BMW extended warranty on your car?

Your car is actually seven years old, and corrosion warranty is for six years. Your bonnet is made from aluminiun, which does corrode, but it's not rust, that happens to iron. Why would BMW refuse on 'Rust warranty ground' How bad is the corrosion, and why did it start?

indie warrentys dont tend to cover roof failure

To be honest Paddy, what's to say it is covered by my extended warranty?

My experience with Benham Wolves is shocking. They wanted 150 quid for looking at the Satnav mechanism.

Plus.. I know the /M is more, but my warranty is £850 py.. you could replace a roof for £850.

If I were you I would cancel the warranty, because you qre shelling out money for something that may not happen. Just put the money into an account and save it incqse something does go wrong. I have an 03 plate, and i do worry about the roof.. but i clean it quite often, and i put a waterproof cover on which should reduce roof motor corrosion.

Plus the on board computer will tell them when it failed

I think your car is now of the value that it isn't worth getting a warranty, personally.

That said, if you do get an extended warranty, just find a better dealer. My local is pretty good.

Best to save what the warranty costs for when something breaks. Most warranty jobs sound expensive but only because BMW are doing them the hard way!

A roof failure is pretty rare, just clean your drains if you are worried!

I have a warranty direct cover the steering colum was replaced as a eletrical failure promotive (inde) in newport where very good they know what to say to the warranty guys , I had this warranty with the car they paid out within a week and I can recomend them the quote will depend on miles age etc give them a ring but I think you will be looking at around £200 for the zed I do most of my own maintaince on the car but its nice to have if somthing big go's

Take the warranty for peace of mind. I thank the stars everytime I think of the work mine had done before it was 35k miles old. It is the only car I have ever owned that I paid for a warranty and I certainly never regretted it. If nothing else I got it cleaned every month when something went wrong.

but then another view...

I have had things go wrong, total of what would have been covered for £600 they wanted in the first year, comes to less than £300. So I'm still quids in.

keep up with preventative maintenance and (touch wood) you shouldn't have anything major...

Warranty is simply too expensive on this age and type of car to be cost effective. Prompted by another thread I ran the numbers at the weekend on warranty direct and it was £550 for a 2003 3.0i of <50k. The only thing that would cost me that much is if the engine fell out or the auto blew up and both of those are near nil chance.

I've owned the car 3 year now without warranty so am £1500+ better off :) which is a lot on a car with a book of say £10k ish
Add my X5 that's had no warranty for 5 years and let's say another £2500 making £4k in premiums between them.

Between the 2 I've needed just an alternator that I paid aftermarket £150 for on the X5 and nothing else coverable on either :)

That's 2 free Summer holidays

CJ, for you I would agree as you're quite technically capable, but for the average person I would say it's worth it when you consider labour costs.

p.s. WD quoted me around £350 IIRC, but I never went for it because I'd like to think I'm quite technically capable too now... well I did do the headlight conversion. :D

I appreciate I'm technically capable (and like the compliment  ) but seriously though what is the average person covering for that is going to cost in that region and a bit more. work it out over 2 years and you have over £1,000 to play with.

I'd also point out that my numbers are retrospective, so it's not liek I suffered any loss and DIY'd my way out of it.

Just checked and mine is def £536.33 pa or £46.64 monthly (£670 if I specify franchised dealer repairs)

I'm going to give the warranty a miss. The car has not put a foot wrong since I have had it. So i'm gonna save the money and put it towards something else.

Thanks for the input guys, as always very informative
