As others have said, this isn't just a forum thing, it seems to be the way of the virtual world. Kids being trolled to the point of suicide on FB and the like, sniping and bitching on here and other forums for like minded people etc etc. I'm sure half the reason is people don't view other members as real people and have no qualms about what they say and the effect it may have, I wonder what would be said if these key board warriors ever met in the real world......Sod all I bet!!

Quite a read over my cinnamon bagel this morning 
not a great one though for any recent forum joiners which is sad ,
I see the forum as friendly place primarily because there are many different topics discussed as well as Z related issues & whilst this can be a annoyance to some members who only want car based discussion it also brings about a more social atmosphere .
I joined up at the Alfa forum when i bought the Brera & 99% of all posts there are problem,s or cries for help from stranded Alfa owners usually getting sneered at on the hard shoulder of the M25 from BMW & Audi drivers
yet to have that experience myself
In my 2 years ive met around 15/ 20 folks off the forum & can honestly say every one has been a pleasure to meet including el Taco

I'd noticed the same. Of late there seems to be these little blips where people go off the deep end, take things far too personally and react by thumping out a blunt reply.
However, tone has a lot to do with it. Sometimes the way in which people write things come across differently to how they're meant. This happens in emails, texts, forums. The OP doesn't even give it a second thought and the reader then gets all hurt and upset thinking the OP is having a go.
The comments relating to the E85's becoming cheaper and therefore available to a wider amount of people - perhaps but that doesn't mean that they're all oiks.
The people that post a lot get to know the others that post a lot. They may have met at meets and been on here a long time and therefore get on. That's only natural but it does display a bit of an inner circle exclusivity that can be a tough one to crack. However, saying that, people are welcoming as a whole.
I do find this post slightly interesting as very recently a post was made about what makes this forum such a great place to be and why we're all so chummy and lovely and fun.
Swings and roundabouts I guess. Things get said, things escalate and get out of hand. I think Tony P had the right idea by suggesting that we perhaps just take a moment and a deep breath before responding.
I like it here, there are a complete variety of people bought together by their love of all things Z4 and that's what we need to remember.

This generally happens when banter increases.. When I signed up years ago and on many other small close knit forums the subject matter stays on topic much better and leads to less altercations.
For some of you this may be a bit boring, but it is a car forum after all...

Along with the this approach goes a certain amount of banter and mickey-taking but, in general, it's not malicious and the majority of people seem to view it in the same way as it would viewed be if you were down the pub with your mates - and, IMO, that's the way it should be... Yes, sometimes a discussion can get a bit 'heated' but that's what the mods are there for and, when this happens, people generally realise that they've been a bit of a twonk and, sooner or later, kiss and make up.
To me this forum is losing its edge for being e place to come for knowledge on Z4's
It is becoming a social chat room where even technical questions and discussions become somewhere for someone to voice an opinion or judgement.
It should be about the cars, driving, modding and sharing good times with or without cars and in the lows.
It's too easy for people who don't know each other to bite and judge.
Instead of encourage and compliment.
It's why I don't post as often as I'd like and kept my build threads and detailing threads on another forum.
It's not all bad but it's starting to stink a bit.
You know who you are if you are causing negative thoughts with your comments (I'm not saying I know who they are either) but tone it down.

I closed down my own forum because I got fed up with some of the errrrrr mood swings.
Shipkiller took down his really awesome site for the same reasons.
It happens on forums, new people bring new attitudes, times change, and to be honest change is often good.

The gossipy side of the forum, the bit where folk talk shite when they are bored or geneneraly just want to natter with friends ....... could be restricted access ......

Same here. As a member above said, things don't always come across the correct way over a forum. I could sound rather blunt on a computer screen, whereas in real life you can say it with the right tone.
The picture was a mistake on my behalf. I should've been a bit more discreet about it. I was just excited over getting it on my car.

Agree with the premise of different areas of the forum for different subject matters but we kind of have that and it isnt really working.
Disagree with the premise of restricted access to certain parts of the forum for various people. Just makes it more of a "old boys club".
I think some sort of extension on the former would probably be the place to start.. Keep the car related stuff in one place and the other bits in another.

More of a journey from when purchased and what's been done so far and where i'm going with it.
The detailing thread is extensive and educated me allot.
If I find some time i'll write it up as i'd love to share the knowledge I have learnt and hopefully people will apply some of the processes on their own cars.
Just a note for the moderators, we need you to rule with both a diplomatic and yet iron fist.
Feel free to delete and close down threads or comments as those of us who have been here for a while may scare off newer members who just want to gain some knowledge and advice

This stuff happens all the time. Not everyone is in a great mood 24/7 and can't wait to hug other random people via online forums - inevitably you'll get occasional disagreements. IRL you can tell when someone's in a bad mood, and you won't irritate someone who's in a bad mood - here you've got no idea what's on the other end. Don't forget being a forum - you're pretty disconnected from people on the other end of a thread - so typically posts can be quite harsh, disrespectful and .. blunt. Often people say things they'd NEVER say IRL (even if they'd then respond to that and say "of course i would".. no, you wouldn't). I've been around internet culture (online and off) probably more than most and this isn't exactly a new problem.
I just found the thread that was probably the source of this one and quite rightly, it was locked. Surprised nobody posted the "that escalated quickly" memes..
I'm by no means a long timer here compared to some, but i've been around and spammed as much as most... I don't think anything is particularly bad at the moment, there's (no more than usual) been a few threads that have people making stupid remarks without thinking too much about the inevitable responses, and obviously those who can't help but respond. I love to play devils advocate and i'll be the first to try and chime in with some sort of response if i see something i disagree (and agree!) with.. that's why we're here! The way to fix these kind of posts/people is to not rise to it, make it funny rather than serious and move on..
At the end of the day, if you have a bone to pick with someone, for specific direct attacks on what you've posted, or vice versa .... take it offline, nobody else cares, and you're just creating work for the mods and making other people create threads like this. Hint: If you've been involved in a thread, and someone has posted
- you're probably involved in a stupid argument. This forum is genuinely one of the better ones i've been involved in, lets keep it that way.
Oh - and i'd LOVE a Burberry trench coat, was planning on buying one later this year. Making a reasonably basic assumption of how much the average zed owner earns based on the price of the car, you'll probably find most current Zed owners probably don't spend £800-1200 on a coat.
