 I don't know about selling but 2 years ago I bought mine of Autotrader.

Sorry if that doesn't help.

I wouldn't think this would need to be in ///M specific. :|

I don't see Autotrader being any safer or riskier than the other online selling sites .
You just have to be wary & generally the crooks can be spotted quite easily .
Do absolutely NO deals whatsoever over the net or phone & don't let the car be driven until funds have changed hands
I would also start the process with a advert on the forum as many genuine buyers do join up to buy a reputable car

Autotrader must still be the most widely used way to sell a car in the UK, other than dealing direct with dealers.

Pistonheads and ebay are the other two options but I'd say security measures will be similar across all three.
Just be sensible. only do deals at home address's, ensure payment is valid, be careful with who you go out in the car with, etc.

I would think Pistonheads site would be suitable for a specialist car like the Z4M

:driving:

Auto trader is as safe as anywhere else IMO, when buying used motors nowhere is immune to unscrupulous sellers.

^ This.

Thousands of cars are advertised and sold on Autotrader across the world each week. There will always be scammers and those chancing their luck on the gullible on any selling medium.

You think EBay is less immune to scammers??

Depending on what your friend's car is will dictate the best place. As others have said, if it is something specialist or performance then Pistonheads would be my first choice with Autotrader and EBay for more humdrum cars

I've found Ebay the best way to sell - but as with all car sales, just be aware of the usual idiots who make silly offers and can mess you around.

+1 Im quite surprised to even see the question. Well before pistonheads, ebay, motors.co.uk, etc the two places to look were exchange and mart (now very declined) and autotrader.

As above its as safe as any other, but generally speaking I've always found less tyre kickers there than ebay.

autotrader must be the best optio, but with everything you have to have your witts about you

try posting it on here

I sold my last zed on Autotrader but not without two time wasters who pledged they would definitely be buying at the asking price. One said he had to sell his Golf before he could buy and kept saying 'give me another week etc....'. The other failed to show up to view the car on 3 occasions. Other prospective buyers were keen but I stupidly said they were in second/third place as I was waiting for a response from the first two time wasting clowns.

Silly on my part I know but still a good lesson learnt. The car did eventually sell on Autotrader to a lovely chap which put my demons to rest. I really would like to get inside the head of time wasters as I really don't know what they get out of doing it!

Good luck

Cheers JC :D

I have bought and sold cars on Auto trader with no problems at all, maybe I was lucky if you apply common sense and work on the basis of don't trust any body and remember its a business transaction not a way of meeting new friends or doing some one a favour. Then its as good a forum as anywhere else.

I've sold all my cars on the Autotrader and I have to say it's been the best way for me and beat selling on both here and Pistonheads. No time wasters and sold to the first person who turned up

I bought my Z4C on Autotrader last year, sold my 123d and then bought a 325ti as a daily. Also sold the cheapy run-around the 325 replaced on Gumtree and had no problems with any of them (Gumtree was a bonus as advert was free).

Personally I would rather use A/T than Ebay based on what a motor trader friend of mine has experienced - people frequently win auctions then suddenly don't seem to want the car which is a pain when other bidders may have been serious buyers.

Can't see any method being any more prone to scamming than others so long as you use a bit of common sense.

But yes, why not start on here!

OOh, edited - I just got my second star!!

Almost every car I have ever bought or sold has been through Auto Trader. Used to use the paper copy, these days use the web services. Personaly I'd be more worried about buying or selling via flea bay. But that's simply because I don't fully understand the way it works on there.
