is an M version ever going to come out?

Short answer - Nope!

Longer answer - The E89 is nearing end-of-production and, if there was going to be an ///M version, it would have been out before now

The 35iS is as close as you're going to get to an ///M E89.

No point in taking perfection and making it worse :D

Nope, ain't going to happen. They have ///Msport now, for the marketing suits. All they have to do is turn up the engine map and add badges and that sells product. Where as previously an ///M made the car more fun.

The 35is is far more akin to an Alpina model, without the panache, IMHO. Great car but for a slightly different audience than an E85/86 ///M.

Interesting clip.....Shows the differences in the 2 cars...

Why didn't they give the 35is a bit of a lairy makeover, add a few performance components and stick a proper M badge on it?

Because a proper m badge for this generation car should have the s65 V8.
They raced the e89 so succesfully in gt3 class with the v8 winning almost everything....
Why not market all that succes :headbang: (they had the m3 engine and rear axle on the shelf....)

Agreed! That gt3 car they've been running for a while looks totally fantastic.

Madness not to tap in on that. A V8M3 engine and running gear in a stripped, fixed top E89 body with BIG arches.... mmmm! Surprising that they didn't try something like that ala GT3 911, but it seems volume is everything for BMW these days

But then I don't get why racing with the e89.
I mean the sole purpose for racing for a factory team is publicity.
I don't think its particulary difficult to fit the V8 (The z4 has a huge bonnet and engine space), and if the m3 running gear fits the 1 series (1m), it certainly fits the e89. Making a coupe would be the most difficult part, but they could just make the roadster too..

It's just like manufacturer Citroen, winning the WRC for 9 years in a row, and not a single performance oriented car came on the road in that time...
(while ford (and others) make crazy RS's etc).

How business is now, I even doubt there will be an e89 successor...
Sales are very very low, the e89 sold much less than the e85 I think (maybe even half?)

Now ya talking. Where do I sign. :driving:

When did BMW last go " crazy" over a design on a car...

An E85 M roady looks the same as Z4 unless you know what they are looking for.

M3,M5 etc etc.... Nothing special over the sport version looks wise.. Bmw are unit pushers like ford, Toyota , Renault or Kia ....exclusivity has now gone from the brand, which is a shame..

You still get the high cost of buying, ownership, maintaince costs and depreciation as well as staff that have just graduated from the keith lemon school of charm..

In short BMW play a masterclass on the consumer..

Guido... The 1M doesn't have a V8 fitted... It's the same engine as the 35is ..

All the 35is needs is the chassis/ suspension settings being made more aggressive. It doesn't need any more power, braking etc. 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds.

These threads always make me chuckle, usually it's 'it's m=not an M', the E85/96 is better etc etc. - Yawn.

The N54 engine is great, that's why they put it in the 1M. The 35iS is a great package. What's killed the E89 was its price in the same market as the capable Boxster/Cayman.

I think he's referring to the running gear, i.e. the rear axle assembly and LSD which are from the M3

That might be your opinion but most people wanting a proper sports car would want one which has an LSD, does not use run flat tyres, and does not weigh a stupid amount.
No one on this thread is having a go at the 35is, the question was whether an M version was ever coming out, I don't think you need to be so defensive.
