Can you connect an ipod to your car if you have a 6 discs CD changer fitted?
Someone has told me it one or the other :?

If you use one of the adapters that plug into the CD changer cables (e.g.; a Dice), then you are correct that it is one or the other. If you use an Aux input or the BMW ipod adapter, then you can have both. I was originally planing to install a CD changer then realized that with my ipod plugged in, there was no real need for the changer after all.

You have to install it. It plugs in to the back of the head unit and you can mount the jack wherever you want. Several have put it in the ash tray. Others put it in the glove box. Search on aux input and I am sure you can find a How-To.

I have no idea how it's wired but my 03 Z4 has both. My Aux socket is in the glove box and the CD changer is in the usual place. Both work very well. I agree that if you have your iPod then the CD changer is not really needed but I very often go in the Z4 without the iPod and then I'm glad of the changer.

I see not need for a CD changer with and I-Pod. I have way more than 6 CD on the I-Pod that is for sure and it works great. By the way if any of you use the Zune device, it works well as well. It has Bluetooth in it so if you use it with the Garmin and Bluetooth is turned on there seems to be some interaction. :)

You can have the Cd changer and the Intravee ipod connection together.

The Aux input will also work with the Cd player but this means having no control over the ipod from the head unit or MFSW.

IIRC the aux input became standard fit for 2007 models, if it is fitted to yours then it will be sited on the sloping panel underneath the aircon controls, directly above the ashtray (you cannot see it sitting in the drivers seat!)

Mine has one, it wasn't std but was retrofitted by the dealer and it is sited right up in the roof of the glovebox.

If you don't have it and need to fit one, the AUX kit for the Mini is the exact same thing but cheaper.

Thank all :)
so in laymen terms i need to buy a Aux kit form bmw and plug it in the back of the head unit. :)
will the dealer fit this?

I would go for the dension ice link mate. With that you get the track names appearing on the radio display, you can scroll through using the MFSW controls etc. Worst case scenario just buy a 2nd hand ipod to keep in the car, mine stays in there all the time.

Controlling the music through the ipod itself would be a major pain in the arse (for me!).

Sorry, must have been plus, not pro
Cheers for that
But for me its :tumbleweed: i think i need outside help!

Icelink isnt rocket science, no worse than the aux kit to fit. If you have satnav worth getting the intravee kit instead though as display is better.

I might have an icelink kit for sale in the next week or so, as I'm retro fitting Nav so plan to get the intravee

2dogs - your coupe should have an Aux connection already. Look at the underside of the dashboard just above the cigarette lighter and it should be there. The audio fidelity isn't near as nice as what you get when you add something like the DICE interface but you should have this interface.

How can the audio fidelity not be as nice? As long as the music on your ipod or other mp3 player is stored at a good quality it should play back at good quality quality. After all isn't it all digital audio?

Good in should be good out but crap in can't help but be crap out!

I just looked up intravee and the only place in the US that sells it is http://www.bimmernav.com but since they charge $75 for the plain aux-in cable that the dealer charges $37.50 I would be very weary about buying from them.

Your options:

AUX with or wthout changer. The latter requires some merging of wires - see the AUX DIY in the how-to section.

Dension/Dice, again with or without changer. You'll need an extra connector to use the changer with the Dension, perhaps the Dice has a similar connector.

Intravee - pricey but the best option if you have satnav. Don't know about CD changer compatibility.

There are other brands too, but these are the main ones. I've done a fair bit of research on these recently so feel free to ask if you're stuck.

I had the Aux in in my first z4 and i loved it simple and played great sounding music through the line out from the ipod. i have the Dice unit now and I hate it it is impossible to use the music cuts in and out and it runs down my battery. It is still in my car but has been disconnected for months. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. For me it really was a waste of money. I won't even take it out and sell it because I wouldn't wish that piece of crap on anyone. I would like to tyr the Intravee but it sells for $250US i wonder how much of a markup that is from what it really should cost. Since Bimmernav.com seems to mark everything up to incredibly high prices.

I don't understand the need for a aux-in and a cd changer. seems kinda reduntent to me.
