iPhone 5 - watch WHERE you buy it ...

My daughter's iPhone 5 developed a fault at 13 months old with the on / off button, it basically does not work.

Out of warranty, so Apple washes their hands of it, and even though it is within the 2 year EU law Car phone warehouse (bought through O2 at the time) basically say - sue us if you want it replaced. They quote that the fault has to be notified within 6 months of owning the handset (huh ???).

If you had bought from Apple direct, it would have been covered by the 2 year warranty. Buy from O2 or anyone else - you are buggered after the 12 months.

Has anyone had success in dealing with phone providers for iPhone outside the 12 months period?

Contact the Citizens Advice Bureau, I understand that they can give you all the advice necessary to deal with warranty claims outside the 12-month window.

There are plenty of specialists around who will be able to change the button, from memory its about £40 although that was for an iphone 4.

I thought the apple warranty is only 12 months? I know my old Iphone 5 had 10 days warranty left when i got it changed on xmas eve as the mic developed a fault... and that was direct from Apple.

You can enter the serial number here: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do to check the warranty status... which doesnt matter where it is bought.

Apple do have a flat free fixing service outside of the warranty though.

I have used my insurance from my NatWest account now to replace the phone for a new one. Cost £50 excess and can claim up to 4 phones per year.

Apple wanted £250 to replace the phone outside warranty, O2 and Car Phone warehouse (who delivered the original phone) were saying - tough luck, EU laws do not apply.

I have bought from carphone in the past - not sure that if you buy it from apple you get a 2 year warranty? - they are pretty good at the apple store just make an appointment at the genius bar and take the phone in - I am sure they will be sympathetic - as mentioned a couple above - have you got insurance with your bank account? - will normally cover family phones as well

The phone went to the Apple store today as it is in 100% perfect condition so was hoping for some lenience there. No chance, outside the one year and even though the button not working is a known issue, touch luck.

What is wrong is that they say to go back to your provider (O2) who is responsible, and O2 uses Car Phone warehouse for their delivery hence them being responsible. However, they say that the EU law states that you have to report it within 6 months of ownership for a claim to be valid - which makes the second year cover useless as you would have never reported that in the first 6 months.

What is on the Apple site here: http://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/ is incorrect as they state in clause 2 that you can get your redress from Apple direct during the second year. The Apple store says that as well, but is not correct. Contacted Apple and they say the same as the reseller (O2) that the EU law does not apply or give anything in the UK anyway and that there is nothing you can do about the issue outside the warranty period.

Apple care is no good either as it only provides the second year warranty for about £54. The insurance excess is £50 so not worth bothering with the Apple care either then. On my policy I can claim 4 phones a year so not that I am limited either. The new phone is straight from Apple and has a 1 year warranty as well, which is great. They did say that the first sim you put in locks the phone to that provider. The phone is delivered unlocked.

I would never buy anything from Carphone warehouse again.

I purchased my current iPhone4s from them as a SIM free unlocked handset, same retail price as the Apple store, but they had one in stock locally so it saved me a drive to buy directly from Apple. They assured me it was completely unlocked, but I later found out that the handset locked itself to the first providers SIM you installed. When I complained, they couldn't care less and just told me to go to the SIM provider to get the handset unlocked, which I had to pay for at the time.

I didnt think the CPW sell unlocked phones as all their handsets come with a sim - either monthly or pay as you go? Madness when the pay as you go iphones at the CPW are the same price as unlocked from Apple.

So they do get simlocked based on the first sim that is entered - i learnt this the hard way - when i got a new work iphone - on vodaphone - and entered my personal O2 sim - to check if it was unlocked, which worked, only to realise my work sim didnt work in it after :headbang:

The home insurance is the best route... you get a new phone (and not a stupid 90 day apple one with a repair) cost less and its unlocked so easier to sell on.

The lock buttons on the iPhone 5 seem to be iffy in general, friend's one hardly functions anymore either.

CAREFUL

If you get a ''specialist'' to do the work and fix your iphone, apple will never help you again and wash hands completely.

Speaking on topic though, I replaced my handset the other month and there was a dude being served who was 8 MONTHS out of warranty and the apple technician was saying how a manager can override as long as it is mentioned within 3 MONTHS out of warranty.

Go and argue the toss in a store.

Depending on the manager (I don't agree with this - but it works), you could go to the store and start very polite. If you don't get what you want, raise your voice, then body language then refuse to move. Ive seen this done so often around places and 7/10 times the customer gets what they want due to the manager folding under pressure and/or embarrassment.

Apple would not fix it as it was too close to the camera.

I have replaced the dock port myself on my old iphone 4.. However looking at the 5 it does seem more complex to change the lock button, basically you have to gut the lot:

glad I don't like iphones, I will stick with my samsung

I wish I could stick with Samsung but my handset looses its Bluetooth connection in the Zed (E89) They (Samsung) couldn't give a stuff when phoned them! It works perfectly in my Disco 3 and my wife's Audi.
It drops connection in the BMW loan car as well - I really fancied the new Galaxy :(

Reluctantly - Apple here I come!
