Today I succumbed and bought the base iPad wifi 16gb. This was after using my iPod touch for a while which was pretty good apart from the screen being too small.

Have to say I think I love it :sweetheart:

Seems the vast majority of folks that drag around a 3-5lb laptop end up using it to process email, surf, view/listen to multi media. Why would a person need a fully featured computer for that. A laptop comes apart. That means dirt and moisture can get in. A laptop has a hard drive and powerful processor that suck up battery reserve at the same rate a F1 car uses fuel.
The iPad gets great battery milage. It's not heavy. And i do not need asbestos pants to set it on my lap during use.

I am very happy with my iPad. My wife and I just moved from the USA to Europe. And I find that it is very handy while traveling, searching for a home. It is cheaper for web/email usage than paying the outrageous rates attached to monthly iPhone service. As I'm new to Europe. I don't have a vast network of friends to call over here. So i use a pre-pay phone.
And I pay t-mobile €20 monthly for unlimited 3G web use. And being in my mid fifties. I find that I can see the screen without having to look for a magnifier.

By the way. As I stated in a post before coming to Germany. If any of my fellow Z pilots find they need safe haven. or a place to rest. please send a PM. Always happy to help. I live about an hour or so from hockenheimring. And about 1.5 - 2 from nurburgring.

cheers
Jerry

Got mine today, although ts only the 16gb model. Have to say i love it, and makes life a lot easier for work. Got an iphone 4 from day one, but sometimes i do need something bigger. They need to do more apps with a better resolution, and a better web browser. But so far

Oh i got it for free

Update time.

Will anyone admit that their ipad is now sitting idle and/or in a cupboard ?

Or have lives truly been revolutionised ?

My Windows laptop is now used by my missus. I use my iPad every day! Mainly use it for the internet, games, films on the go and photos. Stuff I can do in the living room.

Any desktop publishing, photo manipulation I use my iMac but the one I use the most is the iPad.

Really don't get the whole Apple thing personally.
WOuld have thought the iPad was a recipy for RSI if used a fair bit, but never used one myself so have no idea how comfortable one is to use over a period of time. IMO it provides nothing more than a small Notebook with 3G and could probably buy a more powerful laptop for the price of an iPad?
Last time I looked in an Apple shop it was full of kids and teens - 'Apple is so kewwwwllllllll'.

Pants :)

Iwouldn't be suprised if one day many hate Apple as they used to hate Microsoft :)

I used to feel the same. Used Windows for years and I am a system administrator on a Windows based network. I bit the bullet a year and a half ago and replaced my desk top PC with an iMac when it was time for an upgrade. I'll never have a Windows desk top PC in the house again! Never had one problem/crash since! Can't say the same about the Windows based laptop I have though!! Mind you, Windows 7 is quite stable now!

I'm still not understanding. If I want to watch a film I have a TV. If I want to watch a film on the train I have them on my iphone and can watch without the guy next to me watching too. If I want to play games I don't use my Iphone because the controls are rubbish..are they better on the Ipad ? And I look at photos about once a year.

I don't have an iPhone, just the iPad.

If I go on holiday, I can just take the iPad now and don't have to lug a 12 Kg Lenovo laptop with me just to keep on top of things.

An iPad is not for everyone, but for someone like me who does not have an iPhone or iPod touch, it works just fine for what I want. And watching a film in the plane is quite cool on a bigger screen ... (and thankfully, I am lucky enough not to have people next to me either :) )

Nobody sitting next to you on the plane :|

Are you the pilot ?

No I reckon a prisoner would have two big blokes with him either side. An iPad would be quite good in those circumstances for all three to watch a film.

I have an iMac 24" plus 2 portable Apple computers then there is a 2GB iPod (mounted in my Z) and the latest iPod Touch what else does one need :) I too think it is just another Apple cimmic to get our money :) ...... not getting one until it has been perfected and the price for the top model has dropped down to $100-

Besides with two Pods why would one need a Pad :P besides driving my Z :driving: is all the fun I need :)

Just in case i havent posted on here......

I love my iPad, its really like the iPhone where you need a good few weeks with it to really get it.....

Apple should loan them out for 2 weeks!!!!!

For schooling having books, being able to write freehand or typing then printing it off is perfect, work as people said when you need to pass something around a meeting nothing looks more impressive than up to the minute tech.

My little one has started writing her name much better since we do it with my iPad, for her its much more fun doing it on daddys new gadet than a bit of paper.....

Im getting an AV cable which allows you to play video, internet (maybe) U Tube and maybe best photos striaght onto a tv. Just think pop around your folks and go through you holiday photos on large screen.

Cheers

Paul, you do realise you can do all of that on a laptop

I had a hp T2000 tablet. Was really good until the screen inexpicably smashed in the middle of the night! :o

Yeah, but it's a bitch to clean the crayon from your laptop screen!

My better half works with severely disabled teens, one poor lad had a massive brain bleed at age 14. Before this, he loved drawing and playing music, now he has no movement apart from some very limited use of his right hand. He also has no speech... with an iPad mounted on his chair, he can now draw again, he can play a rudimentary piano, he can type, speak, watch videos (for some reason, special needs professionals seem to think that all teens with a disability want to watch cbeebies at all times... imagine that frustration for a 16 year old boy who can't turn the telly over himself!), he can read books and play games with his carers and tell jokes.

He could not do that with a laptop!

The laptop argument is ridiculous anyway. Anything an mp3 player can do can be done on a gramophone... it's just harder to carry around. Seems to me people want to hate it, so will find any argument they can against it and I'm betting they've never used one?

Doesn't suit you but suits me I guess. You may change your mind if you tried one for a couple of weeks. Controls for games are the same but work much better purely because it is bigger. One of my hobbies is becoming photography so the iPad is great to show them off and to look at (iPhone is just too small). Also some of the photo editing apps are very good now and they range from free to about £1.20. Try buying a programme for a laptop that does the same thing for the same money! Same as games.

It's been a common theme in the thread. Those who like it seem to be trying to dream up uses for it that a laptop can't cover, and those who are not sold on it struggle to think of anything significant it can do that their existing equipment cannot.

I suspect this gap will not be bridged ! :D

i read at the weekend that apple sell an ipad every 3 seconds ! useful or not the numbers speak for themselves.
