Intermittently Trunk Won't Open

Sometimes the trunk won't open via keyfob or the interior button. Believe it has something to do with the convertible top. No error codes. But raise the top and lower it again and now it works... I don't think it know if the top is fully up or down. Again no error codes or warnings.

When the condition presents itself, it doesn't open manually or with the keyfob. It appears it doesn't know the convertible top is closed. If I lower the roof and put it back up the again, the trunk will once again work. Very intermittent problem, There are no codes, no messages on iDrive and the convertible open close buttons are not blinking or red.

The locking system should be checked against broken wires.
If the trunk opens, check if the trunk light is on. If not, it's wire is broken on the left.

Is the roof fully closed when you try to open it with a fob? If yes then there is a simple fix:

Look at: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpa ... Id=54_0413

If you can't enable roof open with a fob when it's fully closed there are sensors in the trunk. 4 Hall effect sensor (number 7) and 1 Microswitch (number 4), I suspect that one of Hall effect sensor doesn't detect the internal holder in the trunk for roof in the position.

The top is fully closed and while driving the convertible closed warning periodically illuminates and the warning sounds. While this fault is illuminated, the windows and the trunk no longer work. So one of the sensors for top closed is intermittent. I'm going to hook up ista d later and see if there are any clues.

To answer a previous question, yes trunk light illuminates.

Problem happened again yesterday. Convertible top was up and locked in position. I parked the car and went to open the boot and no luck. Looked in the car and the convertible top up button was illuminated. I had to press the open convertible top button for several seconds and then press the button to close the convertible top. Then everything was fine and boot opened as it should.

I'm not seeing any frayed wires or visual problems. It happens so infrequently, and it's never in a place or at a time allowing me to troubleshoot with ISTA D. More frequently, I'm driving down the road and will hear a ding and see the top up notification on my iDrive. It comes on briefly and then disappears.

A couple of questions.

Do you have to remove that big nut to get to the switch? And what nuts need to be marked for reassembly.

No.

These ones:

The comple unit has to be removed in one piece.

Details can be found in the linked howto's.
Better you invest some time into reading these threads as stumbling over a couple of small pitfalls under time pressure.

I'm going to order the switches and hold them till better weather. Hopefully I can make a video tutorial.

Well, out of time. One of the switches failed and I need to replace. Hopefully this week I can replace and do a video tutorial.
