Intermittent roof operation.

My roof has developed an intermittent roof not operating mood. It opened part way then stopped. I closed it and reopened it . Similar happened.I drove for a 10 mile round trip on closing no problem. Any idea what the problem is??

Assuming its not a battery problem and a short run has charged it sufficiently, It's possibly a an intermittent break in the sensor loom between the roof ECU and the claw motor

I had trickle charged the battery then tried it from key. When it stopped I started engine to complete the cycle. Then reopened it it was slow to complete. After the run all seemed ok but I’m wary, haven’t tried it yet again.

What’s your battery voltage after the cars been left for a few day’s & how old is it? :?

If you're opening it using the remote key facility it will often stop as it loses the signal.

As long as it cycles fully with the engine running I wouldn't think you have a problem When it does suffer due to low battery the roof judders up in a start/stop fashion inch by inch before stopping completely.

I had exactly the same juddering problem with my roof - no other issues, never received a single 'voltage low' warning in the car.

New battery sorted it - grab one from Tayna.co.uk and save a chunk of money.

did you have to take it to a bmw dealership to get it programmed to the car?

No, I did it myself using Carly. Apparently the car knows how old the battery is, and will not charge the battery up to full capacity once changed, unless you 'register' it as being a new one. Not sure how much difference it makes in the real world however, as plenty of people don't bother.

Note if you don't change like for like (i.e you put something bigger/stronger in) then you DO need to do an additional step to let the car know of the change - which again Carly can manage.

I'm guessing you might not have Carly though Tony.

In which case it's a shame we aren't having our regular meets as there have been a couple of members at those who do!

Maybe you can find someone local who can do it on here:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=97818
