Intermittent issues with central locking and roof operation?

I've not had much call to have the roof down this weather ! But my ever curious 7 year old discovered that my roof is non functioning after having a "play". The orange light comes on when pressing the roof down button, but one can't hear the roof interlock disengage, so I'm hopeful that the roof motor isn't spaffed! In concert with this I've had issue with the central locking occassionally not functioning and having to manually unlock the door, the boot however unlocks on the fob no matter what. I've also had it where the alarm has gone off whilst I'm driving.

Could these issues all be related to the imminent failure of the GM05 module? Are there any simple checks I can do to pin point the nub of the matter?

Your thoughts are welcomed
Many thanks

If solid orange light is on, either the boot shelf is in up position or the metal lever on the boot microswitch has dislodged itself (seems to be a common problem for older cars as the lever wears out the plastic ridges that holds it in place).

For the central locking, looks like one of the two electric door actuators could be acting up since the boot actuator is working fine. Do the doors lock/unlock when the door lock switch on the gear console is used?

Your central locking would point to the GM5 module. I had this a few years ago when it was really cold and could not unlock the car unless I used the key in the lock. Contacted a module repair guy who confirmed after detailing symptoms. It's never done it since though so I haven't bothered.

Roof as above, micro switch in boot, so either faulty or shelf in wrong place.

Other forum members pointed me to this guy - http://www.bmwgm5.info - lovely guy called Colin, knows his stuff, repaired it for me for £70 (as opposed to £400 from BMW for a new module). You can remove it yourself (small box under the glove box, just unplugs, about 20cm wide and 10 cm deeps, light grey colour) and post it to him.

Thanks for your reply
As I understand it if there is anything in the boot, ie parcel shelf position incorrect, then pressing the button would illuminate the red warning instead of orange. The 2nd point is very good but unfortunately I can only answer that this occasionally works other times I've had to try manually unlocking the passenger door by using the handle internally and when this failed my son had to climb over the drivers side to get in! Then once the journey was over the doors started to function as normal :x
Which is kinda why I'm thinking as its so intermittent it could be the GM05 module?

Thanks for that err....Mr Spoon :D
I will give him a try

If the micro switch in the boot is the problem, than you can not open, BUT close.
The micro switch is only for the roof opening important.

Hi and thanks for the reply

The microswitch I was referring to was the one that engages/disengages with the interlock for roof closure immediately above the rear view mirror. If this solenoid does not get an open signal then it wont allow the hydraulic pump to be energised? At least thats what I think is the operating philosophy?

I found the metal lever from the micro switch in the trunk (I mean "boot", sorry, Canadian,). I pulled out the assembly, 2 torx-head screws, and put the lever back on the switch. The top retracts properly but I have to be careful when raising the shelf into the "top up" position because when the shelf is in the "top down" position the tab on the shelf gets below the switch lever and hooks on it so that when the shelf is raised it snaps it out again. I'm wondering if there is a part missing from the actuator tab on the shelf and hence it snags on the lever as it goes up?

As far as I am aware the orange light is only an indicator for the boot parcel shelf not being down, any other logic or switching issues will give a red light failure. Check the boot micro switch, if the shelf is down and you cant see a problem (the contact spring can detach) then remove the switch and short the contacts, if that resolves then just get a new switch.

Your central locking issues are almost certainly unrelated and with the gm5, possibly relays. Best first option is a repair rather than replace.

Feeling a bit sheepish, as I didn't close this out

I replaced the rear microswitch for the parcel shelf and all is now good.
However I still have the intermittent door locking /unlocking issues which I am going to assign to Colin Abraham to refurb the GM05 module.

Many thanks for taking the time to answer

Cheers
