Insurance issue

I hate insurance companies with a passion, weasel words, ' oh hang on a minute we can beat that quote now you've decided not to renew" .

You're better off going with a new insurer each year imo, the one you're already with rarely give you a better deal the 2nd year.

^^ this. Exactly my experience. Each year there seems to be one insurer who stand up and want to be the cheapest no matter what, next year, they're off the radar using the exact same details. It's bizarre. Last year for me it was Admiral, this year they weren't even close to being competitive. This year it was esure, it's a screwed up industry. Say you're a Data Manager and you pay £XXX, say you're a Data Administrator and your quote goes down by a hundred quid, say you park your car in the garage and it goes up :headbang: And the whole NCB is a joke, it's just an illusional method of front loading premiums to then bring them artificially down to give the perception of progression.

Many others will have a similar tale. I had an impeccable driving record for 15 years, then one day in 2012 on a steep downhill bank some idiot in a Micra with paper thin wheels in heavy snow decided to suddenly brake with no reason, I was a good 8 car lengths behind him, I had to slam the brakes, skid, momentum in the snow + gravity... it was either trash into him or into a wall, I chose the wall, to avoid third party whiplash claims. That one incident, in 18 years, has wrecked my "NCB" and wrecks the artificial price drop I had beforehand. Have you had any claims in the last 5 years??? Well then sunshine, we don't give a furrrrrrrrk how good of a driver you were 15 years leading up to that point!

And then let's make this all a legal requirement, with slack regulations. GG

It's certainly strange, I've just renewed & went on a couple of comparison sites giving me a best deal of around £200, my present insurers sent me the auto-renew details priced at £170!
How often does that happen!
Regards

I have two separate sets of NCD both with almost 14 years accrued. I've not been driving for 28 years so how does that work? :P

It does all seem a bit weird. I had to 'steal' my wife's NCB for my first Z as they wanted 3 years no claims to insure me, but I'd been in a company car. They just moved all 9 years to me - how does that work ? Meant that we got stiffed for a year on her car mind, then it dropped back by half. Now she's named driver in hers & building it back up, and I am the only driver on mine with 10yrs+. I guess my situation is slightly different though as both cars are daily drives, and the annual mileage on my policy - 15k - does most of the damage...

Oh and aero skirts are REALLY expensive to insure. Don't ever tell them you have them, because that crease down the middle of a bit of plastic can beggar you, on the off-chance an identical car parks next to yours, making yours more desirable to any thieves with a serious eye for detail that happen to be passing at that exact moment :x

How much did the aeros add?

If you remember neither of my neighbours could tell the difference when you car was parked next to mine.

Just don't point it out if you ever claim

I had that this year to for the first time. Paid £250 last year, renewal came through from Admiral for £200. Had a quick look but with the mods meant lots of phone calls so left it as I think I would struggle to get cheaper.

So how can some insurance companies mirror NCB, some gift NCB as they did with me (5 years on the Tiguan) and others wont do a thing?

Maybe one for CK to answer

Did you take the insurance out with the same company you currently insure with? Most companies will give you some sort of NCB be it a few years or mirror what you already have with them. It's just like companies will give named drivers a NCB if they insure a car with them and allowing them to use NCB built up as a named driver.

What I don't get by the original post is that NCB has always been per policy and so you can't have it on two policies so what's the fuss apart from not knowing how insurance works and reading the small print.

Like others have said if you find you have a more expensive car to insure you stick the NCB on that and set up a new policy for the less expensive car, if doing it with the same company they will give you some sort of NCB on the car.

I am also with eSure as they mirror my no claims, despite me having several anyway from previous cars.

Admiral multicar does the same thing but I much prefer eSure.

I assume with Esure, you have to have both cars with them to get this discount?
I have a BMW X1 as a daily which is insured by BMW Insurance (2nd year and nobody else been able to beat the quote it), but I'm sure won't offer a discount for a second car. Will try them though but if not will have to shop around for a competiive 2nd car insurance offering. Any recs?
